Arguably, Smith does emote better, but Keanu’s deadpan acting just fit well with the plot. The characters after all, are siting motionless in a chair, with a wire plugged into their brains, while they wander around in a made up universe.
I think if Will Smith had been in the film, it wouldn’t be considered the classic it currently is.
