Samurais were a myth

its the same thing as knights whereas in reality it was more complex but it all got distilled into a few exaggerated traits

The samurai were real, and samurai honor was certainly an extent concept. But neither were quite what they've been portrayed currently.

It was a thing, but overly romanticized by former samurai who out of wartime went on to be writers poets calligraphers playwrights or merely inspired other artists. The extremist values of samurai honor became MORE common after people absorbed those myths of yore (especially during the rise of imperial japan) and began to apply them in modern war, with death before dishonor mass suicide and martyr combat suicide eg kamikaze pilots

life imitates art

Kinda sorta. Not the exaggerated movie honor, but sorta.

Any civilizations eventually develops the concept of weapon-carrying individuals tasked with keeping things in order. Any civilization eventually develops the concept that these enforcers must have a code of conduct, honor, to prevent abuse. This principle had varying degrees of success that cannot be quantified easily due to the complexity of criteria involved and the lack of sustainable historical evidence beyond anecdotes and myths.

“Honour”, was just an excuse to save face. They were obsessed with how they were perceived by others. More samurai died from knives in the back rather than duels

Ninjas and 1000 yr old lolis are the fake ones

Probably
Look at how the nips have lied about their recent war shenannigans of the last century, even when called out they deny deny deny.

Of course they prop up their samurais who got btfo by bullets as some muh honorable faggots.

They were just guys with swords.

warrior honor is near universal in civilized societies
roman generals would suicide themselves if things went to shit as well
the slant eyes don't have a monopoly on seppuku

>any civilization

A couple of incel generals doesn't mean they all committed suicide.

I think a real thing that people seem to gloss over is... what happens to all your family and loved ones if you don't.

The samurai as a class was a bizzare adaptation of the confucian concept of a junzi but it was hereditary position instead of meritocratic. Japan had the four-class system of Gentry, Peasant, Artisan, Merchant like China/Korea had but the first class was different.

A Japan where Samurai had to actually take an examination for their position would've been interesting.

Me the Japanese officer erping as the honorable samurai cutting apart Chinese peasants with my mass production katana

Yet japan seems to be the only developed government that perpetuated ritual suicide up to the end of WWII

This

The samurai were corrupt as hell

This guy from Cracked.com has a video on Samurai. Cracked.com made the video in response to me reading Inazo Nitobe's "Bushido: Soul of Japan."

I dunno but Throne Of Blood was a kickass movie

Yes.
Samurai were jack-booted thugs.

I hate the people at Cracked.com, so shut the fuck up.

You can apply the same to today's police, although there is a trend today to automatically assume all those with power or authority are corrupt and evil, e.g. police always shoot innocent blacks.

Yes, honour has always been a meme concept. These fuckers literally had a tradition where they would kill innocent civilians or stab criminals just to test their blades

When you think Samurai. Think less Samurai Jack and more a mafia enforcer asking peasants give them rice for 'protection'. When they couldn't pay 'protection' they took the peasants wives and daughters and sold them into government sanctioned whorehouses to pay off the debt.

>Any civilizations

Forget it Jake, it's Feudalism.

The WW2 thing was more sengoku era romanticism and trying to revive or restore a period that seemed more honorable. Literally jap generals being weaboos during WW2. There was a long stretch of time between the abolition of samurai and the meiji restoration and WW2 when that shit wasn't common at all.

>retards itt think that because they did "immoral" shit it means an honour system didn't exist
Fuckwits. Honour and shame is not the same thing as good and bad, much the same as illegal and legal is not the same as good and bad. It's a lot harder to force someone who's a trained warrior to do something with violence (the normal course of action) than it is with social ostracisation of them and their family.

Best Samurai Kino ever created

you can't refute

The 47 Ronin were real and they really killed themselves according to the Samurai code when they were done
