I think new dub is pretty good, I'm assuming its cool to hate it just because its new amongst OG cartoon viewers although I haven't checked.
Ritsuko's argument with the JetAlone guy actually makes sense now when its picked up on later in the episode and also does a fair amount of foreshadowing as intended.
TEH REI's voice acting is also loads better. The old ADV dub made her sound malicious towards Shinji and implied a sort of mean girl rivalry with Asuka which isn't what is going on at all.
