No, they actually had just run into some money... American National Enterprises, a wildlife film company, had just given them some dough to film a semi-documentary about finding Bigfoot based on Patterson's self-published book "Do Abominable Snowmen of America Really Exist?". They used some of that money to buy a gorilla suit from costume designers Phillip and Amy Morris, used previously to have actors playing gorillas in carnivals and fairs.
