$2000 is the bill if you pass out in the parking lot of the nearest admitting hospital. Ambulances are fancy taxis that cost about $900/mi.

If you get in an traffic accident and the cops say you need to be checked out they'll call an ambulance for you. If you refuse they can force you to go, even up to arresting you to do it. "For your own good." Because clearly you were injured and aren't thinking clearly to be refusing medical care. Then you still get billed thousands of dollars for that ambulance ride.

Bonus, many hospitals will not accept walk-ins for ER! If you're dying of a heart attack, or you've got your bloody stump of an arm in a tourniquet made out of your own belt they'll still call an ambulance to take you inside. So you have to wait and bleed to be admitted.
