You missed the point. He never "made it." He lost and sacrificed a lot. He just never lost his self-respect, integrity, sense of purpose, self-acceptance, self-responsibility, or his mind. He seemed to do the impossible, which is not succeeding despite having poor genes (that was merely improbably). He held on to everything that made him himself even while living life as someone else.

The teacher was a nice black lady who had her home destroyed in Katrina and then her daughter (my age) died of a random brain aneurysm the year prior so she was completely checked out. I was an extreme underachiever in high school though and she was the only teacher who actually called me out on just being lazy.
