I thought it was a cat from one of the stories with that peculiar name.

Imagine naming your dog 'nigger'. And then you spend ages training him, and to only respond to the name 'nigger'. And then you go out in public with him and keep shouting commands at him punctuated with his name. Or when he runs away, which of course he'd do a lot when you let him out without a leash as you go collect the newspaper in the morning, you'd walk through the neighbourhood yelling his name.
