The first season was a legitimately interesting little scifi mystery story.

It came along at just the right time when 80s nostalgia was in full swing, and still is to a fair degree.
The nostalgia goes further than just product placement and trends from the 80s though, the story and cinematography itself is a blend of popular 80s and 90s movies/etc. Inspiration can be seen from from ET, The Goonies, The X-Files, Twin Peaks, even Half-Life.

The first season wasn't really written to be a multi season show. Most people expected it to be a one-off thing or at most an anthology series. However it became so popular that Netflix wanted more of the same, so the writers had to kind of tack on a larger story where it wasn't really made to fit.
That's why S2 is weaker. It's similar to Twin Peaks, how everyone got drawn in by the Laura Palmer mystery, but then they have to keep going after that arc is over and it just kind of falls apart.

That all said, season 2 is still pretty enjoyable except for episode 7, which was quite obviously a stealth pilot for a spinoff series.

Will seems more preoccupied with keeping his friends and sanity this season, if they touch on the gay aspect it wont be with Mike. Keep in mind that he might not even be full blown gay, they'll make him bi and have him show interest in both men and women.

Well aware of that but do you really expect the Duffers to write this apparent love triangle well? They were an interesting plot point once upon a time but now they are just lazy plot devices for popular media, it’s now just used as a way to add false “excitement” and angst to the narrative. Placing yet another love triangle in the series will feel hollow and forced and will completely demean the significance of Wills coming out story.

Besides, as I explained earlier their opportunity to showcase any kind of coherent romance at this point between Mike and Will is gone.

The fact that there's a "Will has a crush on Mike" moment in the actual script for the season 2 finale means they definitely haven't scrapped it. You don't leave something in the final script and release that script publicly if you're just planning on scrapping it. It's going to come back. Mike's definitely not gay and not going to get with Will, but it's absolutely coming back.

Which leads to the next point, if it was integral to the plot why didn't they include it? The scene could also be interpreted in different ways, they could have had Will looking at mike as a scene transition but alas, if the whole point of that scene was to show that Will is gay it would have been important to keep it if Will was supposed to have a crush on Mike, no? But since it wasn't included in the final cut they will keep the gay storyline but won't go down the love triangle route.
