Second season was a slight drop from S1, but the two female characters added were a wealthy heiress and a con artist sidekick for Guerrero which gave them a bit more to work with when you have a team of 5 (even 6 at one point when they briefly worked with Baptiste)

it's weird that it's mid-90s as the production value comes off as really high, probably one of the reasons it wasn't continued

Firefly was already unironically cringe when it ran and I first saw it. Been so long since I now that I can't remember many details, but it was a lot of stuff like the episode where the damsel in distress is !-twist-! actually not a damsel but cynically exploiting Mal, etc.; shit you could see coming from a billion miles away and that wasn't satisfying when it reached its conclusion. And garbage like them always almost making money but then they don't because retarded reason just so that they'll always be short on money and so have to do retarded shit.
