Absolutely trash taste. I wouldn't call it a scary film, but the slow, deliberate pacing, the goofy but believable characters, the score, everything is great. It's not the type of film you'd want to watch all the time but it's like a good slow album that hits the spot when you're in the mood.

I find 99% of depictions of Satan/Lucifer incredibly trite and boring, except for this one which is incredible.

So many of them are just so mundane and "well, picture a bad human, but even badder! and give him horns and red eyes and make him sneer a lot cause that's cause that's scary!". There's nothing interesting about the supposed master of all evil being just a B-movie monster. An existential depiction that leaves you questioning the existence and nature of right and wrong on the cosmic scale is a lot more intriguing and frightening.

If evil had an ultimate form, it would not be just doing the opposite of good, it would be removing all meaning from the concept of good. Entropy is the most terrifying thing in existence.

Passion of the Christ. Only /our guy/ Mel would have the wisdom to portray Satan as what he is, rather than what he presents. The use of the Madonna and her Child is symbolic of how Satan corrupts and withers all that is good, all the while taking the image of something we know and love. Much better than some seductive bad boy portrayal or an obvious image of evil.

The best cinematic depiction is michael york as the character alexander stone in the 2001 film megiddo the omega code 2. Movie depicts the rise of the antichrist and the final battle of armageddon. Movie has great action and isn't heavy handed with the christianity. I think there is only one scene in a church and only one scene of the hero (played by michael biehn!) praying. It is pure kino and should honestly be remade (with a less ridiculous title) and given a 200 million budget with someone like michael bay to direct.

My second choice would be satan as depicted in the animated dante's inferno movie based on the videogame.
