Oz season 1 was so fucking good but I had to drop after S2. It was pretty clear they had no idea what to do with the series.
Like they made some fucking amazing characters, so many good actors, but the storylines were so bad holy shit. I think the last episode I watched was the one the guy accuses the governor of smoking crack.
I often stick even with bad series when the characters are good but they butchered this one too much.

OZ was pretty authentic. In how the sections were ran, normally there was one guy that ran a section. We would ask prisoners when they entered the facility if they were part of a gang, and would house them away from their gang members but also away from their opponents. So we had to have a gang officer that would keep up with all the gangs and who had drama with who. But the sections would still end up with "gangs" and gang leaders.

I worked at county so we got them before they went to the pen and we got them after they served their sentences to be released back onto the street. We would keep federal and state inmates for years waiting on beds in the facilities they were sentenced to. The stuff I saw was- The misdemeanors (short timers) were the ones we would have the most problems out of. The lifers on the extended plan (the guys that would come to jail, spend 6 months then get out for a few weeks then come back for another 6 months, usually were the most rowdy). Guys going to prison that were either going up for a few years or coming back from prison didn't try to rock the boat because they would get extra time tacked onto their sentence for rule infractions (good time lost). All the fights mostly were from pricks that thought getting a few months for a dui or beating his wife made him hard.

I still can't believe Paul Newman actually ate them all in real life. What a mad lad.

It was an experimental unit that was run in different ways.

On the subject of drugs, the jails had a problem with tobacco, and on occasion there would be pot smuggled in. The last year I worked we had a problem with PCP, and meth. They would pay an officer to bring contraband inside, a pack of cigarettes would fetch $100 because they would then sell a cigarette for $7 each. So they would make $140 on a pack of cigarettes, selling them out one at a time. (this was back in 2005) They would have loved ones send them birthday cards in the mail, the loved one on the outside would put a fake return address (the jail wouldn't accept anything without a return addy) and they would buy 2 identical hallmark cards and put pot or tobacco in between the cards and glue them back together with elmers glue. If they paid attention and didn't make it too fat, it would be impossible to notice unless you hold it up to the light to see through it. If the officer doing mail pass didn't pay attention, they would get their contraband, otherwise it would be confiscated and put in their property. So yeah, drugs did get in, but mostly it was tobacco.

On the rape- The ones headed to the pen mostly don't view it as rape. They come to terms and believe what happens on the inside stays on the inside. They don't view it as "gay". Some of the older guys don't believe in this, and laugh at the younger guys. But for the most part they are "gay for the stay".

I watched Shot Caller today. Not at all what I was expecting but it was still pretty good. Jaime Lannisters accent was a bit wonky, there wasn't as much prison action as I would have liked, and it was a bit too long for the story they told, but it was still pretty good.

I have a ....friend... who works in prison. And apparently there is a huge problem with young guys who have been socialised on the internet and have avoided maturing into adults. When you're a kid you find your classmates attractive. Then you mature and find adult women attractive. This is normal. With the the internet and gaing you're able to avoid this process. Thus, you find young guys in their 20's still attracted to pre-pubescent girls. They get into all sorts of legal difficulties from downloading CP and grooming children.......long story short, young guys with no "street-smarts" or wherewithal find themeselves in nonce wings full of hardened sex criminals/sociopaths. These young, effeminate nerds find themselves being passed around as sexual playthings and commodities by the older, predatory nonces . Then when they get out they're on the sex register for the rest of their lives and have serious STD problems.
