In this world of staggering perversion and brutality, beauty is the only value, and "Fascism" is the true evil, according to this show. When a character in Neon Demon quips that "beauty is all that matters," I took it as satire. However, it seems this is how Refn really feels. The entire message in that regard seems to be raw animal behavior — good-looking animals rip and tear each other to pieces, fuck them in every conceivable hole, rape or not, incest or not, and the only 'bad guy' all the factions can agree on are the “Nazis”. One of the characters even goes into a monologue about the swastika and its power as a magic symbol.

What i think is really going on here, is that to those people that are truly in Los Angeles, who never leave Los Angeles, who are a part of the "entertainment industry", that his is very much their world, this is very much their experience, and this is very much their fears which they are projecting here.

I'm sure to people who are child traffickers, rapists, casting couchers, mutilators, coke addicts with Cartel friends, that "Nazis" and "white men" would inexplicably and irrationally seem like the "bad guys" and the bringers of Armageddon, because one day, perhaps soon 'right wing death squads' or 'literally Nazis, or "literally Hitler" is going to come for each and every last one of these type of people, and burn them from the earth with a fire.

Clearly though, they are having some sort of existential crisis in LA culture, and are at least cognizant that what they do is eventually going to have a severe consequence for them. Consequently, (and there is even someone literally preaching about 'fly-over states' and they are a rattlesnake that will eventually come for them, because they have been stepped on too many times) somewhere inside they must know they are in fact the evil of the world.

It was good but very uneven, definitely not the best TV show or miniseries done by a single director.

Im 6 episodes in. It's very clear to me that the first episode was the worst by a long margin (though I still loved the majority of it).
I'm surprised by all the hate the second episode gets though since I thought it was fantastic.

Also, I like how episode 4 and 5 actually work pretty well as a standalone film and can see why he chose to show them at Cannes. But yeah, possibly the best tv show/film I've seen this year

Watching the series on Amazon it skips the end credit sequence in 5 seconds. This episode the skip button didn't come on for at least 30 seconds maybe, I thought I was mistaken that there were 10 episodes when there was only 8!? I thought that was the finale and had a pit in my stomach but then the skip icon came up. Honestly after watching the other 2 episodes it felt like the better way to have ended the show.

I'm gonna give a drive-by post just to say it's incredible.
I'm only 2 episodes in, but it's not hyperbole to say this redefines television. The second episode is considerably better than the first too, imo.
Consider the "golden age of television" circa 2010 roughly. Critics and audiences were super impressed because television finally seemed to care about shot composition, lighting, impressive set-pieces etc etc. Sure, there were shows like Sopranos, The Wire and the rest that were considered great. But they were far from the rule or the norm. We started getting a lot of shows that drew in audiences in the same way films did with the same sort of spectacle.
(I'm talking about Dexter, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Masters of Sex, Boardwalk Empire etc)
But the thing is, all those shows were still very much television shows. They still followed the same formula of dialogue dialogue dialogue, action, dialogue dialogue. They just told more interesting stories with bigger budgets.

Too Old To Die Young is impressive because it goes so much further. It's not unusual to have a ten second static shot of a guy leaning against a wall with flashing lights and almost no sound. The sort of thing you normally only see in indie arthouse films, you're consistently seeing in this show.
I can't quite call it a 13-hour film as Refn does because it still divides too neatly into episodes. That is, each episode has a clear beginning, middle and end. But it's definitely not anything I've ever seen done in television before.

10/10 refn moments all through out the series
