"Smells like bad writing." Yeah, it's not your fault for being a shocking brainlet, it's the movie's fault.
It's supposed to be a frustrating ending. YOU know that Travis is a nut who wanted to blow someone's head off, and he got lucky that it was the pimp instead of the senator like he originally planned. YOU know this isn't the last time he's going to kill. That's why the glockenspiel note at the end of the movie is literally reversed. He's rewinding to the start of the movie and he's a time bomb waiting to blow up again. The clock has started ticking again.
And the irony is that people suddenly think he's a swell guy, a hero, just because he blew up at the "right" person this time. Next time he probably won't, and the public will wonder why.

Because she thinks maybe there's a side to Travis she hasn't seen yet, a heroic side. YOU know she's wrong, obviously, but she doesn't. She's like everyone else, assuming Travis was being altruistic and brave. Christ almighty this isn't very difficult to understand.

Also adding to this The secret agent that spotted him had a clear view of what he looked like and the mohawk definitely made him easy to remember. So why the fuck didnt he ring any alarm bells when the same guy with the recognisable mohawk murdered 3 guys in cold blood?
