If you thought the ending sucked, you're right. In the words of Refn, "we basically just kept shooting until we ran out of money." What an incompetent nigger. Refn is incapable of subtlety, self-control, and humanity.
The subject of choice for most of the 14 hour fiasco? Pedophilia, rape, incest, witchcraft, necrophilia, drugs, human trafficking, deception...and the list goes on. In this world of staggering perversion and brutality, beauty is the only value, and "fascism" is the true evil. What a joke.
I'm far from a prude. American Psycho is one of my favorite films, for fucks sake. But everyone knows that artistic license only goes so far.

I'm gonna give a drive-by post just to say it's incredible.
I'm only 2 episodes in, but it's not hyperbole to say this redefines television. The second episode is considerably better than the first too, imo.
Consider the "golden age of television" circa 2010 roughly. Critics and audiences were super impressed because television finally seemed to care about shot composition, lighting, impressive set-pieces etc etc. Sure, there were shows like Sopranos, The Wire and the rest that were considered great. But they were far from the rule or the norm. We started getting a lot of shows that drew in audiences in the same way films did with the same sort of spectacle.
(I'm talking about Dexter, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Masters of Sex, Boardwalk Empire etc)
But the thing is, all those shows were still very much television shows. They still followed the same formula of dialogue dialogue dialogue, action, dialogue dialogue. They just told more interesting stories with bigger budgets.

Too Old To Die Young is impressive because it goes so much further. It's not unusual to have a ten second static shot of a guy leaning against a wall with flashing lights and almost no sound. The sort of thing you normally only see in indie arthouse films, you're consistently seeing in this show.
I can't quite call it a 13-hour film as Refn does because it still divides too neatly into episodes. That is, each episode has a clear beginning, middle and end. But it's definitely not anything I've ever seen done in television before.

The series then becomes about the feminine, the spiritual, and the chaos that reign after order falls apart.

it really, really wears thin after about the 6th or 7th episode. There are dozens of scenes, each episode that take 45 seconds to a minute to pan ankle to head on a character for no reason, no pay off. A great deal of the runtime of this series is slow panning shots to nothing or of nothing. You multiply that by 10 or 12 per episode and thats 20 minutes right there just panning.

I wasn't sure about this series, but when i looked into who created/wrote/directed this I thought ok, I liked Bronson, Only God Forgives, Westworld & The Neon Demon so I'll try it out. Mind you Drive was a piece of shit....total piece of shit.

I really enjoyed it & think it's the best series I've watched this year so far. Cinematography is great, not much dialogue & just well written/directed overall.

i would say that the tone and the mood would be even better if he cared, at least, at offering something to like about the main characters.

I think Martin is a pretty good character. As far as rest of the characters are concerned, i think people who know his work, know what to expect. He has been doing very similar type of films since Drive. It's kind of unfair to compare late period Refn to early Refn. I agree that better characters would make the show better, i just don't think it's a valid reason to dismiss the whole show,especially if you know his later films.

The opening scene in episode five creeped me out.

I would much prefer that over the cop scenes and the random nazi shit throne in. It broke immersion which is the last thing (i would hope) the director wants.

Agreed 100%. First episode was kino but slow. Second not quite as good but still kino and slow. Third episode really drew me in (that 'memorial service'). Episode five was agonizing in a good way. Six was as good and made me like the Mexican storyline. Seven had its moments. But somewhere in episode eight the plot was lost. Episode nine was just sissy porn and political cringe and ten was bleh.

It's a shame, I was really on board all the way through episode eight. Kino as fuck. I love Refn's eye. I can seriously sit through the slow pans and just appreciate what I'm being shown.
