Despite what you see in the media, the US actually has a very robust social support system. Also, you don't actually pay taxes unless you make a certain amount of money. A poor immigrant family that doesn't speak English is going to have almost no job opportunities and what few they have are going to be low paying. Combine that with the cost of the social support services and you have a drastic economic net negative.

Except the republicans invented a new law that says that in order for you to get your voting rights back you have to first pay all financial obligations related to their offenses. Which basically means you could owe the state tens if thousands if not millions of dollars, given how expensive everything is today. And no felon has that kind of money. And because there's no centralized way to get that information easily to know how much you owe, it's going to lead to a lot of people being unable to vote. You could apply to get your debts annulled, but that's going to create a giant back catalogue and there's no way most people will their debts cleared.
