Am I the only one who cant stand the lack of Russian accents? I'm only 30 minutes in and I can't take these dudes calling each other Russian names in British accents seriously. Assassin's Creed Unity has the same problem, I just find it super distracting. I know having them speak the actual language would be the most accurate, but something about an accent makes me feel like at least they sound how they should, even if the words are in my language. I watcha foreign films with subs for a reason...

I read an article that said they shut down the idea of accents 2 auditions in because they sounded too cheesy. Yeah no shit, it's just the audition. Hire a voice coach and work on it. accents are stupid if used to depict a nation that doesn't speak english to begin with so accent is pointless. Russians don't speak English with Russian accent among themselves so Russian accent wouldn't be any more authentic than various British, Swedish, etc accents heard on the show. cause it's still fuckin English. either go full tarantino in Inglorious Bastards (foreign language with english subtitles) or don't bother. as a rule, foreign accents sound fake and exaggerated unless the speaker is a foreigner from that country.

OP here, I think I overall agreed with and I think just Russian would have been better, but and accent would be a nice halfway point. I'm on episode 2 now and when the scientist was handed the report written in Russian I subconsciously assumed he wouldn't be able to read it. Maybe I am a brainlet, but growing up playing the Assassin's Creed games I just kinda became used to accents representing foreign languages in things. The show is pretty fucking good tho, I'll probably binge the whole thing tonight.

Who the fuck cares about accents, if the story is good, is told well and the acting is good. You do realize that people from different parts of Russia have different accents right? Now imagine people from different ethnic backgrounds from the USSR who don't necessarily speak Russian as their first language, Ukrainians, Belorussians, non-Slavs like Armenians, Azeri, Georgians, Uzbeks and Tajiks etc. Do you want their butchered Russian accents too?
That is just one more level of added fanfare, in lieu of special effects and big action set-pieces to cover up how shit your show/movie is. Good shows don't need that.

No, they don't, actually. The way they pronounce the Russian names isn't "correct" at all, they pronounce them exactly like English speakers always do, which is wildly different than the actual Russian pronunciation.

The use of normal British accents in the show is actually quite well done, as it allows you to get a feel for the different people and their stations in life. Working class people have working class accents, university educated people have more refined accents. Fat man who worked in a shoe factory has his original roots exposed by his accent. I liked it.
