Between 720p and 1080p there is a huge difference (noticeable even on smartphones and laptops); between 1080p and 2160p not so much, albeit there's still a slight betterment in the sharpness of the picture (and if you follow the proportions as to size of tv and maximum view point distance from it can even get a better detailed picture but ONLY if the media content is shot in original 4k format). 8k is still a meme.
The general verdict: 1080p still holds up as the definitive format
