It was NEVER funny, and I've always considered it a personal failing on the part of anyone who bought into it. Bad people.

precancellation FG didn't age very well. it was edgy and funny at the time but it wasn't that well made.

they were really crushing it after they came back and before they went 16:9 in season 9. but they didn't have a simpsonesque drop into the shitter like the simpsons did around the 10-year mark. I don't keep up as much as I used to but every time I see clips on youtube of FG episodes that I haven't seen before, they're always really good. part of that might be cherrypicking and if I went through every episode there'd be more dud jokes. but also the simpsons turned bad in a way where every second became painful to watch. the entire thing turned bad, and an individual funny joke couldn't save it.

Goddamn I actually saved this image around ten years ago and this zombie show is still fucking running somehow.

Their reasons for hating it lately are pretty call too (punching down comedy isn’t funny, the show makes fun of Jews too much, too much othering, now FG is promising to cut back on making fun of gay people, don’t do it Seth! I agree. Family Guy still has good bits and I usually get some laughs from it. But I do like the show better in the early seasons. Felt like it had more heart.

"Modern Family Guy" is probably my favourite episode.
Rewatched the early season recently and only about half of the pre s7 or so actually hold up.

American Dad is a strange case. The first 6 seasons dont really do it for me but since then its been gold.

I agree, Family Guy is for me one of the funniest shows on TV. It just makes jokes for the sake of making jokes and doesnt worry about character consistency or plot or anything. Its just whatever the writers thought would get a laugh and thats great
That being said the Trump episode from the latest season was easily one of the worst things i've ever seen on a television. It was like they filled a room with blue checkmark twitter users and told them to come up with their most epicest trump jokes, none of them realizing how overdone and tired they all were.
