Omaha happened to be a bad combination of a relatively well defended stretch that was also minimally effected by the bombing/shelling.

It was the least fortified route. Operation bodyguard(?) was used to make the nazis think they would land at Calais or a deeper port. Since it worked the nazis had a stronger force at Calais and a weaker one at Normandy, specifically less panzers. It was the optimal landing.

The Atlantic wall was heavily fortified, Operation Overlord was to commence at a time when the Allies could land on the beaches of normandy at dawn and the airborne could drop at dusk, effectively using their surprise attack to the fullest. The germans knew they were coming but they didn't know where. The shelling from sea was too inaccurate to do any specific damage and if they got too close they risked being sunk. Again, the coast was too dangerous for the planes to hit anything specific. So if they wanted tanks they had to send in engineers to cut up those metal hedgehogs and clear the beach of mines.

Because they had to clear the beach before any tanks or machinery could be brought inland.The allies machinery would be literally stopped by physical barriers if they were to land first and consequently be sitting ducks. Shelling might set off mines but the defensive structures such as the hedgehog spikes, would still work, along with surviving mines and other man made barriers. A lot of you guys are shitposting real dumb ideas on here but let's be real for a second: why didn't the allies just land a bunch of men and women in casual beach wear? Instead of using military style ships, have dozens of yachts drift up to the beach and start disgorging beach goers with parasols and beach balls and towels. The only reason the Germans retaliated so hard was because they were getting the shit shelled out of them and they saw thousands of soldiers landing. If they hadve seen thousands of beach goers disembarking off pleasure craft they would've been confused and held their fire. Hell, most of them probably would have come down from the bunkers and mingled. And once they were the disguised allies could have just walked off the beach and then pulled guns out of their picnic baskets and overran the bunkers from behind.

It's not like the Germans were expecting an invasion there either. That plan would've worked flawlessly.

I'm not saying to try to fight at night, I mean just physically getting the men onto the beach at say 3am as stealthily as possible to prepare for an assault at first light. I get arguments that you would have difficulties coordinating and it would be a nightmare for sticking all units together, but why wouldn't the benefits of having everyone all set up and prepared already on the beaches, even if haphazardly, outweigh the casualties inherent in storming up a beach into machine gun and mortar fire?

To my knowledge the Germans didn't have spotlights scanning for night beach assaults, so as long as you didn't put any form of lights on the ship visible to the outside you should be able to land with virtually no casualties.

It would probably be a nightmare at night time at sea. You really can't see anything. Also they airdropped in at night and it was a huge cluster fuck. Those specific beaches were chosen for landings due to the roads those beaches had that drive inward into northern France. The key was capturing the roads as fast as possible in order to get a foothold into France as quickly as possible before the Germans counter attacked with armor. The huge fear of the Allies was getting promptly counter-attacked by the Germans as soon as they landed on the beaches and being driven back into the sea.
