Mercury is one of my favorite frontman of all time and I enjoy most of Queen's songs for what they are, catchy pop rock in the vein of the Beatles but for the late 70s and most of the 80s.
There is some genuine artistic stuff in there (not to the same degree as The Beatles, let's say, especially the latter's older stuff), but for the most part, they aren't very different from most pop artists of today. I would say they were very polished and didn't take many risks (the risks they did take usually turned out to be their best songs), despite what the movie implied. The film itself is very sterilized (Rocketman is much better in that regard) and the editing is absolutely atrocious. Malek's performance is undeniably great, but I know for a fact had we gotten Sacha Baron Cohen's version of Bohemian Rhapsody it would have been unmitigated kino.
