When I first saw it, I thought it was alright and decently funny, but it was just "meh". Re-watching it again years later, I'm older and I've come to appreciate detective stories about uncovering conspiracies/solving murder mysteries and whatnot, and I couldn't fucking believe I didn't appreciate it that much when I first saw it. It's fucking amazing, it's the anti-detective mystery in that Dude is so far from a detective yet is thrown into the middle of this odd case he wants nothing to do with, fumbles his way through interactions with other characters which are again like the antithesis of detective interrogations where people just give him this information and shit, etc. Etc. And in the end he solves the mystery completely by chance, thanks to having sex and having a conversation he has with the woman he'd been seeing in his dreams which in itself is a detective story trope and all that, then Donnie's death which upon first viewing seemed so pointless and served nothing to the plot, I now understand it's yet another detective trope, in that there must always be at least one victim as a result of the case and who better than sweet Donnie who did nothing to anyone, the most innocent person in the whole movie.

Just all-around such a fucking amazing movie, I'm still kind of upset at myself for not really appreciating it fully when I'd first seen it. It's a comedy parody/homage to detective stories without being shitty about it. I love it. I hate that it's now getting some bullshit rep for being "Reddit" whatever the fuck that means.
