Pointless to debate. Each was a master in his own way, and both reached the top and became iconic.
Personally, I prefer Prince, because of the huge funk influence running through all of his work. And, the dude was an alien, he played all of the instruments, ran the studio, wrote the lyrics, and the shit he rejected became hits for people like The Time and Sheila E. You have to wonder what's sitting in the vaults at his studio, sitting there.
MJ...the dude was talented, yes. He actually did write a lot of his hits, he was immersed in music since a small age, and it was just natural to him, like throwing a ball is to other kids. There's demos of his biggest hits, where he sang all the parts. But there was a lot of translating being done there, from his scratch tracks to final polished release, and that's where one person comes in: Quincy. And that's the difference between the two - MJ needed a Quincy to make the three albums that made him a superstar, Prince did that work himself.
But, MJ was a pop singer, and I'm not that into pop. Talented? Like a motherfucker, yes. But Prince had the FUNK. I caught Prince on the Hit and Run tour, and it was one of, if not the best show I ever saw - and people I know who saw him earlier on the Purple Rain and Sign O The Times tours said he was even better back then.
Plus, you know, the whole "doesn't fuck kids" things.
And they were both batshit crazy.
