For the average person, SH is SH2 and that's it.
It's actually a pretty competent movie. The SH games composer Akira Yamaoka even played the first three games while the director watched him play so the director could absorb the atmosphere and understand what the game were about.

Please don’t tell anyone to play the remastered editions. They’re awful. Most of the original voices are gone, the visuals were changed because of copyrights so a lot of text is in comic sans, and a few parts were just ruined with the lighting or fog.

Honestly first Resident Evil movie is kinda good , if you forget The Matrix influence the movie has a great tense and claustrophobic tone. It replicates the vibe of early Carpenter movies like Assault On Precint 13.
