Well if I'm not mistaken within the last couple of years there was some live footage of a giant squid, most of the actual specimens though have turned up dead and if they're near to the surface they general die quickly because depressurization gives them an acute version of the bends and ruptures their vitals. The largest sizes are speculation based on beaks recovered from dead whale stomachs, since the animal's beak grows at a predictable rate it's not difficult to guess their size based on it. To my knowledge there's no video or physical specimen of the really mature giant or colossal squids though, all of the ones found to date are relatively modest compared to some of the beaks found in whales.
