How did something so banal, derivative, repetitive and mediocre become so incredibly popular?
How?
How did an amazing world full of magic and mystery become popular? A world paralell to ours, one that is just slightly beyond reach. Oh, to be a wizard and go to Hogwarts. To be sorted into one of the houses. A world not only full of mystery and wonder, but of danger and excitement! Oh to sniff and eat the shit from Hermione's panties. Oh to be young again, said Dumbledore as he polished the dragon dildo.
it had all the right things in it, a special kid, magic, school stuff, mystery, etc. pretty much perfect for when it came out, at least the books
It's loved by low-quality people - fat women with no bf and six cats, homosexuals etc. Also very popular abroad in China, Japan etc who see it as very British, it's exotic to them.
That's what I said, banal and derivative and repetitive. Oh so repetitive. Full of crappy old tropes. They ride broomsticks for fucksake.
Shut your fucking dirty mouth before I shut it for you
>How did something so banal, derivative, repetitive and mediocre become so incredibly popular?
Magic
Most people are tasteless and stupid, so we can assume success is inversely proportional to quality.
it was for kids who probably didnt have exposure to that shit. why is disney shit popular? it's all fucking derivative repackaged shit
It was good at one thing- Worldbuilding
Thats all people need for escapism
Harry Potter's worldbuilding is fucking terrible though.
this
it's the same reason why MCU is so popular
Kids like repetition. Also they have not been exposed to all the old tropes bundled together in the books and films. The adult fans are just defective and/or thick.
yeah, no it isnt
i don't know. look at every popular thing ever
The repetition is what does the world building. When you go back over ground you have already walked upon, it fosters familiarity
This. Star Wars for example is just a giant collage of previous tropes and concepts. It literally ripped off many designs from Valerian, for one.
this but unironically
Isn't that the case for everything popular? It appeals to the common mass of plebs.
Not everything popular is bad though. Some great films and books are rightly popular. But in general challenging concepts and true originality are always going to appeal to a minority.
Don't forget the pedo demographic!
then give me examples.
The books are pretty well-written on a superficial level - I enjoyed the first three or four until they grew thicker than the fucking bible and became cultural events and took themselves waaay too seriously. But the lack of imagination on display for a fantasy series was almost disgusting. Rowling just chewed up a load of old tropes and regurgitated them and appears immensely proud of this. Compare her books to those of Philip Pullman aimed at the same audience. He displays real imagination.
>The books are pretty well-written
"No!"
The Matrix, Empire Strikes Back, Citizen Kane, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Alien
On a superficial level they are not bad. OP here, I don't hate the books or films, I don't find them actually bad. They're just so disappointing for the level of popularity they have attained.
