People in the Anime and video game industry in Japan do read great literature, not just from East Asia, but also the great works in Western Culture, and they put it into their video games. Heck, even the guy who does those Dead or Alive video games has read Dafoe's "Robinson Crusoe." Some of the folks who worked on the Blood C anime even based their Elderbairn monsters on the creatures from Lovecraft's literary works.
