100% agree. I despise anime so maybe that was why this movie didn't resonate with me but frankly so many aspects of it just were mediocre.
Connor Wood
Overrated on what metric? I can only think of a handful of animated films that could be considered better.
Caleb Allen
>I despise anime, so maybe that would contribute to why I did not like this anime movie
Carson Stewart
Its a good movie, my favorite ghibli, but its really only overrated by teenage girls. Just like how Porco Rosso is overrated on here.
Julian Cruz
>I despise anime
watch 80's and 90's stuff like Ninja Scroll and Goku Midnight Eye

studio ghibli stuff is cute and nice tones, but fuck this one sucks balls. so overrated
Grayson Clark
wow user, you’re so unique and different for not liking anime
Adam Garcia
I was expecting to cry but the scene where the older brother kept flipping around while hanging onto a bar took me out of the cinematic universe

Fuck this thread. "Overrated" is such a bullshit criticism

Friendly reminder that "overrated" doesn't necessarily mean "bad".

This film gave us 2049, so by definition its based.

I agree, The Wind Rises is more sophisticated.

Miyazaki films make me fall asleep.

Animefags, why can't they make anime that it's not cringy?
LOGH and Whisper of the Heart are the only good anime series/movies I've watched. I've truly tried to get into anime, but holy shit. The plots and the characters can't appeal to grown men. Like Death Note for example, it had nice setting and idea but holy shit are the characters and the plot cringe, it's fucking disgusting.
Are there any anime that doesn't have any fucking superhero shit, cringy inner dialogue or 'kawaii' anime girls being disgusting and annoying? Like anime actually made for adults? No fucking mecha shit or anything like that, they're fucking terrible.
Pic related, my pick for the thread. What the fuck was the point of movie? It seriously lacked themes and it was just plain dumb, kids don't eat rock no matter how hungry they are. Also, it's so fucking hard to get emotionally attached to cartoon characters so I truly didn't feel anything. Idk how people say that this movie is depressing or anything at all, it's just dumb and almost complete waste of time, it's aesthetic during some scene.
Logan Rogers
Joseph Taylor

Propaganda to make Japs appear human and not just rape-monkey war criminals.
Jonathan Powell
What a shitty movie. Zero plot, cardboard cutout characters
Jacob Scott
Try The Night Is Short Walk On Girl, Paprika, or Redline. If you're fine with a series then try Sakura Quest. Summer Wars is also decent but the main characters are young which you seem to be against but maybe I'm misunderstanding you.
If you are fine with younger characters then try I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Penguin Highway, Okko's Inn, Silent Voice, or Your Name.
Robert Richardson

Why didn't you like a movie about forced child labor?
Samuel Barnes
>The Night Is Short Walk On Girl
The artstyle and the plot doesn't seem very appealing. I'm not against romantic movies, I enjoyed Whisper of the Heart and Amelie is very good movie. However, if it's romantic movie it has to have top tier cinematography or artstyle.
>Paprika
This one is a maybe, interesting but not that appealing, will add this one to watch list.
>Redline
That's a pass, looks pretty fucking stupid.
>Sakura Quest
I definitely don't mind series, but this one looks too femine for me to enjoy. However, it looks oddly /comfy/, I might give it a try.
>Summer Wars
Alright, looks decent put the virtual world premise isn't that appealing to me. I will give this a shot still.
>I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
Pass on this one.
>Penguin Highway
This one looks and sounds quite fun and lighthearted. I will watch this one.
>Okko's Inn
Alright, googling and seeing that fucking main character made my blood pressure rise, hard pass.
>Silent Voice
"Japanese teen drama", I'm not Japanese teen, I think I can't enjoy this.
>Your Name.
I've watched this. Plot, characters and everything else besides aesthetics were just terrible, 5/10.
Aren't there any serious animes that bases on Japanese history? Why the fuck I've never heard about any anime that has samurai setting and isn't any type of fantasy or shit like that?
Ethan Butler
Oldfag animewatcher here. LotGH is one of the best anime ever made so it's going to be hard to top that one however I know exactly what you mean most anime is insuferable.
I suggest you to watch anime that are based upon actual adult novels (LotGH) and not ones based on kid media such as Manga (Death Note) or Light Novels.
Out of the top of my head there is Shin Sekai Yori, Texhnolyze and recently there was Yakusoku no Neverland. Ignore the art styles or the apparent subject matter. It's best to jump into these blindly. I promise you that they are actual adult stories that takes the viewer seriously despite what their artstyles might imply.
Brandon Price
What a dumb piece of shit.
Oliver Ramirez
Not enough to carry a movie.
There has never been a good animated movie that got by solely on its animation.
Jaxon Robinson
Howl's Moving Castle. I showed my sister this and she fell in love with it. Some guy that has a castle falls in love with a woman despite her appearance. I'm surprised Keanu isn't starring in this live adaption already

This really does suck. He had access to free food from his aunt, and he also had a shit ton of money in the bank. How would anyone be sympathetic to the little shit for starving his baby sister to death? He's just a dumb asshole.

One Punch Man season 1 was a show that got retarded almost 0 story but the entire show was build around insane animation.

Honor cultures never ever win in the end.
There's a reason why they lost against burgerland in the war.
America wanted to win. Japan wanted to play war.

Yes it can. Movies are a visual medium, more so with animation since they're literally moving paintings. Akira, Redline, and Sword of the Stranger are all good movies brought up by their excellent animation.
Isaiah Mitchell
this
Elijah Morris
OPM is shit.
There's literally nothing good or interesting about a show where the main character is unbeatable.
Try watching something with actual substance like Blade, you dumb weeb.
Ethan Lewis
good god this movie is boring. I'm amazed that anyone who thinks otherwise possesses the mental fortitude to breathe or blink.
Michael Hall
Kill yourself RS
Daniel Jenkins
You need to be able to pick out the anime that are trying to be good from the ones that are pure pandering to a demographic. You also need to recognize that most of what people talk about online are TV anime (and most of the people who talk about anime online are animefags who like the pandering shit you hate), so unless you're looking for them you'll miss the good films. In This Corner of the World was an excellent movie from just a couple years ago that you may have missed.
If you're going to watch a Satoshi Kon film Paprika isn't his best. Try Perfect Blue or Millennium Actress instead. Ignore the rest. Some of it is good for what it is, but none of it is what you're looking for.
>The Promised Neverland
I would say don't listen to this fag but the other recs are decent.
Logan Cox
It's literally the fastest 3 hour movie ever.
I don't get people who call this movie boring and slow.

The promised neverland is actually good are you just hating on it because it's something recent? The novel actually has great worldbuilding which the show has followed so far.
Cooper Perry
The art style of The Night Is Short Walk On Girl is unique but it was one of the first and most enjoyable anime films I've watched. Okko's Inn is surprisingly dark despite the cutesy art style.
If you want a samurai setting then try Mononoke. The series not the Ghibli movie.

Anything that has won an oscar the last 17 years
Lucas Fisher
No, I don't. But you're comparing different things.
The animation you see on screen is a bunch of different jobs put together on a single cell. Shot composition, lighting, cinematography, etc.
Think of a technical superb film, say 2001. Make everything else boring besides the story. Is it still the revered masterpiece it is today?
No its not.
David Watson
Sure grandpa
Landon Mitchell
I specifically said the story is shit but it's animation kino. The story is made as light and easily digestable as possible so that you can focus on the actual animation instead of having to follow a story. I mostly even skipped to the fight scenes every episode which was worth it.
Leo Hughes
Watch Elfen Lied it's the most mature anime I've seen.
Mason Stewart
>watching something just for the fight scenes
Why don't you just play video games then?
Nolan Butler
Thanks for the suggestions, user. These looked quite interesting, will give them a go.
>In This Corner of the World
This one looks kino, hell yea. Are there any other drama kind like this, based on real world and real things? If it's a historical setting that's even better.
Lincoln Price
Because videogames don't have the amount of high quality animation like one punch man does. Didn't I say it's animation KINO?
Just like some people watch film for the cinematography some people watch animations for the actual high quality animation
Dylan Martinez
Monster is pretty good.
Daniel Hall
The Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal OVA seems right up your alley.
It's an absolute masterpiece.

Asher Jones
It was acceptable for a TV anime, but it was a thriller, certainly not an "actual adult story that takes the viewer seriously." Parts of it felt like the battle of wits, but it wasn't joking. I definitely wouldn't recommend it to someone who hated the entirety of Death Note.
>60fps
>the story is shit also i skipped all the talking bits talk about boring lol
Oh no, it's retarded.
The animation and fights are in the forefront but the first season of OPM doesn't slouch in its themes or their presentation either.
Carter Flores
not every movie has to have explosions to work, young one.
Try it again when you mature.
Let me guess... you're a Michael Bay fan?
Gabriel Lee
this is easily the most reddit post I've ever seen on this site.
Carter Ward
I agree hesitantly. I've only ever seen the theatrical cut and hated it for the shitty cliche ending scene + the narration. Only recently did I find out about the Director's Cut and Final Cut, which both get rid of these. I know the Final cut is a sickly green color but adds more violence and adds the full unicorn dream scene. Which one do I watch? Really can't be bothered watching both since I'm getting through all the stuff on my back catalog.
Tyler James
Most movies on the imdb top 250.

yes ok kiddo it's fine go watch Transformers again, it's obvious simpler less subtle fare is what you're really craving.

100% useless thread. You're all arguing about whether you agree with your perception of what other people think. Is talking about films themselves too difficult for you? Why waste your time in this contrarian circlejerk?
Liam Torres
>There's literally nothing good or interesting about a show where the main character is unbeatable.
There's actually a lot of very fun things that are done in OPM that you cannot convey without a unfathomably powerful main character.
Villains are permitted to unleash their ultimate states, triumph over heroes, destroy the city, and cause nearly unmitigated havoc. They can shine like nobody's business and you get to see them at their absolute peaks, overwhelming and successful, but you're not limited to the villain's apocalypse plot destroying the world as long as you can always slap the "One Punch" button to resolve it.
In this regard, you also get to see the heroes shining as much as the author believes they should, because not every hero is going to be able to mulch anything that comes their way, but at the same time, it's refreshing and enjoyable to see them succeeding at destroying monsters with their abilities and strategies. But on that note, if they SHOULD lose the fight, you are given a situation where they absolutely will, but without the story just removing fun characters you might otherwise like. Genos has been destroyed so many times at this point that he'd be seen as a perpetual jobber if not for him actually being exceptionally powerful.
If you watch this show exclusively for Saitama, you're a retard. If you watch this show because you think there should be any tension in a battle with a character who's name is "One Punch Man", you're an even bigger retard. Pay attention to everything else around him, like the themes straight-up tell you to, and you see where the intelligence of the show lies.

Ryan Johnson
I don't watch anime anyways, you stupid weeb.
It's funny because for all of this pretentious posturing and waxing philosphical chicanery that OPM engages in, it will never ever be as genuine or good as a simple movie like Blade or The Rocketeer.
Those two movies know exactly what they're trying to do and have no delusions of grandeur about (((subversion))) and (((irony))). OPM is no better than Marvel capeshit.
Austin Mitchell
this, in the end the guy just takes acid
Carson Ramirez
>certainly not an "actual adult story that takes the viewer seriously."
It very much is and it's quite like shin sekai yori where it starts innocent and gets more and more serious and deep as the world slowly gets build up and the truth is revealed.
Sure the first season of yakusoku no neverland is still a bit on the childish side but the actual story has timeskips and they grow older every time well into their adulthoods and it's more about the actual world and how it became that way than about the initial story of the orphanage in the end.

No person I know who likes Miyazaki films can described as 'masculine'. They really do seem to attract the worst kind of soifags.
Joshua Cook
>>Aren't there any serious animes that bases on Japanese history?
That's actually a good point, for how thrilling the Sengoku Period and adjacent eras were and how much samurai kino there is, there's very little authentic historical anime. There's Champloo but even that had to monkey it up.

I agree. Princess Mononoke is much better.
Logan Butler
>One Punch Man
>subversion
Maybe you could argue it subverts the superhero genre with the idea that the overpowered guy who actually saves the day isn't a hero because he doesn't risk anything while the weak one getting his ass beat is the real hero, but that's a trope in itself at this point. I think you're just throwing around the new favorite word of fa/tv/irgins boardwide and can't back it up by explaining how OPM subverts even a single thing.
Shin Sekai Yori does not start innocent. Neither does The Promised Neverland. They both show exactly the kind of fucked up world you're dealing with very early on, then expand on the details and history later (I can only take your word for that in the latter case - I never read the manga).
My problem with the anime wasn't the world, but the story and presentation. The kids are geniuses always thinking twenty moves ahead of each other and the audience to surprise us then explain how clever they are. Half the episodes and A parts end with some suspenseful cliffhanger that ends up either being a complete fake-out or resolved immediately. This isn't how an adult story that takes the viewer seriously presents itself. It's a thriller. It's packaged to excite you as much as possible with twists and turns and suffers for it. I can see some superficial similarities to Shin Sekai Yori, but The Promised Neverland tells its story more like a Death Note or Code Geass.
Sebastian Lee
>people who consider themselves "masculine" feel threatened by Miyazaki movies and must throw shade at fans in order to maintain a feeling of superiority
Seems legit
Aiden Bell
I normally despise anime but I like Miyazaki's movies well enough. He has a much more sound approach to film making in general that doesn't rely on genre conventions and fan service.
Adam White
I know this is supposed to be a sad film but I have no emotional attachment to it whatsoever. Is there something wrong with me?
Angel Thomas
I disagree yakusoku no neverland had only 1 "kaikaku" moment and it wasn't even that obnoxious or meant in a way that changes how the plot works or anything. It was merely to establish that the children are geniuses which was because they were specifically farmed to have big brains because those are specialty snacks and produce more profit for the company. I don't think it's like shinsekai yori at all and I wasn't really implying that at all like "it's like shin sekai yori and thus good". It's mostly a story about children having to come to grips with the cruel world they live in and act like adults in order to survive.
The story isn't told at all from a "plan" perspective like death note or code geass where they go on big monologues how they tripple crossed the other to come out victorious. Instead the story is more told from a melacholic standpoint of slowly coming to grips with how brutal the actual world is and them coming to realization that they are going to have to make real sacrifices if they want to change this.
The show is also more of a horror rather than a thriller.
Aaron Ward
>>Paprika
>This one is a maybe
Do note that this movie suffers from a problem common to Japanese movies in general where the ending comes out of nowhere with little to no explanation or build up. I liked the movie well enough but the climax of the story always felt out of place.
Oliver Brown
I can tell you're bringing the manga into this, which I haven't read and can't comment on. What I can say is you're not describing the anime. Maybe it comes later in the story, or maybe the anime just adapted it poorly. Either way I wouldn't know.
Alexander Mitchell
Good god yes. Reddit wants to designate this as a modern classic so badly. So fucking forced.
Hudson Brown
It's not overrated in the sense of the influence it had, but I didn't care for the plot at all
Christopher Price
>s this overrated? Everyone I knew thought it was shit.
I don't know. I had a very different experience with Looper.
When I was in school, a bunch of my classmates screened it one night and everyone walked out of it thinking it was the hottest shit ever. I was sitting in the back wondering if we were watching the same movie because holy shit it sucked.
Jaxon Mitchell
have you tried not being mentally retarded?

both are wrong. Seita didn't do shit before his aunt told him to move his ass. Maybe its understandable for the little girl, but not for a man (by that age standards) to just expect to be fed in war time. he was a son of an admiral, yet he lacked discipline. Him leaving from his aunt's house was just a tantrum.

I really don't understand why people rate this piece of garbage. the little girl was annoying. am I supposed to feel for her because she is a little girl and she dies?
