Great aesthetics (world design, character design), great music, great pacing, strong world-building, sometimes complex gameplay systems, set-piece variety, actually lots of optional nonlinear content for a JRPG (play some other JRPGs from the time to see what I mean), incredibly strong utilization and subversion of archetypes.
Just think of things that make the original Star Wars good. If you can't and are too big-brained for Star Wars same probably goes for FF so you'd be better off watching fucking Drive or The Matrix or something.
