I never got why The Sopranos is heralded as one of the greatest shows of all time. It's definitely one of the three most overrated shows in the history of television. It's clichéd, unoriginal, overly melodramatic, and predictably prosaic, not to mention that the show has not aged well. I will admit though that Gandolfini was a terrific actor but the show itself isn't all that good.

The mob drama is all parallel to the family drama and forms the entire cinflict of the show. Its not just rube stuff to be discarded

The show is much more "realistic" than a show like Breaking Bad or Fargo. It doesn't have the same tension, the same briskness of pacing. It allows the characters to develop more naturally as a result, more realistically - it's not as dogged. That said, it sometimes feels like the plot is kind of aimless when compared to those other shows. I personally prefer Breaking Bad, but acknowledge that the Sopranos is a different kind of show, interested in being more of a character study.

I also preferred the depression themes over the mafia stuff. I'd still love that show if none of the characters were mobsters.

Its about Tony and what its like to be Tony, and nearly every scene is a simulation for the viewers to feel what its like to be Tony quietly alone in his own head just living his life. Like the finale death scene. That's such a brainlet way of looking at it. What Breaking Bad loses in thematic poignancy it gains in tension and plot complexity. But it still retains a lot of the former, even so. The Sopranos does the opposite of that - it's extremely thematically powerful, but the episode-to-episode plot is a little less gripping than Breaking Bad's.

The college visit episode in season 1 is where I got hooked.
