The Terror

Why is this not considered the best TV show ever made? Are normies just too dumb to understand it? Is it females?

MR. HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICKEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

stupid supernatural element

Supernatural bits were good. They just showed the monster way too much.

It wasn't supernatural it was just a load of dwarf inuits in a suit. That's where they put all of their dwarves. They banish them to the bear suit.

Would've been better if there was no monster or just a regular polar bear hunting them down.
You cannot disprove this.

do you really think its the BEST TV EVER OP? That's a strong statement

because of that retarded supernatural monster

>Are normies just too dumb to understand it? Is it females?

Normies don't even know about it. Hope it stays that way.

Hell no. It attacked enough to where it was frustrating not seeing it early on. Only like halfway did you realize it wasn't a regular bear. Should've just been a regular but abnormally large bear

females

because its another show for pseudointellectuals who seem to think little dialogue and menacing long shots of characters staring at nothing is considered good television, just like chernobyl

Are there laser swords? Hot elvish chicks? Orcs impregnating your female offspring? I don't think so...

Hey you stole that from the History Buffs guy.

Listening to the audiobook now, it's really good

no. i read something by dan simmons once and it was awful. generic genre shit but he mentions the iliad or shakespeare every five pages so that midwits can feel like they're cultured while still consuming dumb trash. i'm not touching another book by this fag with a 10 foot pole but i bet all the monster shit was 10 times more tedious than in the show.

Wasnt that guy a consul of Rome?

What was Mr. Hickey's actual problem? And don't tell me it was being at the bottom of a river in England, you know what I mean.

because it's not, it's the second or third best tv series

3. Lead

Some parts were good but you gotta admit that it was kinda boring from time to time.

ITS GOT BOATS SO FEMALES ARE RIGHT OUT

I thought the pacing was great.

the problem was how they just made it a bear instead of this misterious being phasing in and out of the snow, walking only on the front two legs and shit

I'd rather have a prequel about Francis and the Opium War desu. I lost interest when they left the cool ship and it become a survival show.

It was a survival show since episode one.

THE AMOUNT OF BASED IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE AMOUNT OF BOAT

Five good wipes, user

Imagine if you had Hickey tied up like that hahaha would that be hilarious, you could do anything to him hehe

fuck im not gay enough for this faggot

on Yea Forums ? Consult of Rome duh.

he was. they recycle those shit actors who make great memes whenever they need a great meme. which is a norm now. you can't have a show/movie without memes.

Why did the monster have to be muh ancient legend ghost dad instead of abominable snowman or some crazy ass monster like the thing. That was my problem, not the monster itself, but what the monster was. It's like if predator wasn't an alien hunting for sport, and instead was the ghost of an ancient jungle man who hunts down those on muh homeland. It becomes lame as fuck when you find out exactly what it is, where as a lot of movie monsters you just know what they can do what they look like and maybe their motivation.

Either should have had cool ice monster or no monster, fuck this show.

sorry dubs but the show was too short to actually explain tuunbaq like in the book. a huge bear would've sufficed for the tv show

He’s a fantastic portrayal of a sociopath. He appears genuinely charming on the onset and his instability only surfaces during key moments with his character and often in subtle ways. Statements he makes or bizarre looks he gives people, unwarranted self importance, etc.

Also to answer your question OP its the same reason Master and Commander is mostly overlooked now, it’s a movie about boats. That automatically and disengages all females from liking it. Only men enjoy sailing and stories about boats unless it’s Titanic which is a shitty movie about a shitty boat.

Inuit mythology isn’t consistent with modern storytelling structure and Tuunbaq was representative of the entire region to the white man. It can’t be fully understood by them just like the land itself. That was barren, uninhabitable wasteland to the whites and they never fully comprehended how natives lived there or why they’d live there.

they either should've made the monster just a particularly large bear amped up by the crew's collective delirium or at least give it a better design, practically every Google result for Tuunbaq that's not the snow one is better, or make it something else entirely, like that snow Hassan

Should I watch this after I'm done with chernobyl

fuck off, it's not a fucking excuse for the show that the source material has this apparently important bit that's gracefully omitted from it

>leadership was allowing the men to poison themselves
implying there was any other way

based

It’s really not important, it’s just the Inuit mythology. It also doesn’t apply to the show because in the book the Tuunbaq is genuinely invincible and can not be killed and is barely even “real” in the sense that it can even be physically harmed. Absolutely nothing can do it any permanent or even temporary damage, Gore blasts it point blank with a rifle and the round doesn’t even hit it, it just phases through it while Goodsir watches.

you could do a lot worse with your time, but also a lot better
it's a genuine 3.6

How did hickeefaggot know to cut off his tongue to try to control manbearpig? What did doctor beta poison himself with?

females have an affinity for shows with a predominantly male cast. you can lash out at them as easy targets if you want but they're not the ones doing the damage here.

The officers were eating that food, too. They kept it secret so that the men wouldn't murder each other fighting over the last scraps of salted meat.

did the creators ever explain why did they opt to not have that as the Tuunbaq but an also clearly supernatural manbearpig

He didn’t, he fucked it up. He noticed the shaman they shot and later Silence had no tongue and put two and two together. But like a sociopath he jumps the gun rather stupdly with a half formed plan only a mentally broken person would be so confident in.

Straight guys don't like being reminded that they can't survive on their own.

Because when the book was written they never found either ship and there was still a lot of mystery surrounding it, same reason there wasn’t a vampire hanging out in Crozier’s bed when he burns the Terror himself (this actually happens in the book).

There’s less mystery to the mystery now than there was when he wrote it I think, so they probably changed it. Also it was AMC making it, and they probably figured normies wouldn’t like a monster that just completely buttfucks everybody, gets no “comeuppance”, is completely incomprehensible, and isn’t even something Crozier should want to kill. They excised Crozier’s religious history and own backstory about his dream seeing, which again would’ve put people off. It’s still a good show, but the book does a much better job painting the land around them as so different from their origin that it might as well be a fucking alien planet, and how the evil of the place won’t die and literally seems to make nightmares manifest as reality. In the book the Arctic is portrayed as outright otherworldly. This was how people saw it back in the day. It only makes sense if you put yourself in the mindset of a superstitious 19th century Englishman trying to not die in what would seem to you like frozen extension of literal Hell itself.

>vampire hanging out in Crozier’s bed
bat or Vlad
>they probably figured normies wouldn’t like
so they threw a potentially great story under the bus for a thoroughly bland one that normies might like?
absolutely terrific

>Titanic
Excellent post. I would add that, while Titanic has a ship in it, it's not really a ''boat movie'', because it lacks the camaraderie, or the adventure factor to it.
The ship is too massive, and while it has some typical scenes of a boat movie, it most definetely is not, because females can quote and understand it.

Non-straights cannot survive even on everyone else.

It’s not bland imo, just not as weird and out there as the book which does get super fucking weird at times. Tuunbaq still functions as a representation of their inability to coexist with the land. And yeah, there is a scene at the end where Crozier stumbles upon the drifting Terror now free of ice and finds a corpse with “rat teeth” in his bed. It gets up and starts coming towards him when he turns his back and he’s able to recognize using his weird spirit vision that it really is there, but he knows it will only hurt him if he turns to face it, so he calmly walks out and burns the ship down. You never learn exactly what it was but imo it was the leftover agony of his dead and dying crew.

Ironically certain parts of the story Simmons wrote are MORE possible now, iirc I read somewhere that they now think some of the whites did settle and have kids with the Inuit, which happens in the book (Crozier fathers 2 children himself) but not in the show.

a lot of femanons on Yea Forums watched it when it aired
it's two boats filled with boys in uniform so not that strange

Oh man that scene in the book when Crozier or somebody looks at it through a telescope and sees it walking like a bear, then it stands up and extends its fuckhuge neck and stares right at him from far away i still think about sometimes. Every scene with Tuunbaq in the book and show was kino imo, I like how they made him resemble a short faced bear for the show too since it was a real thing that existed there and helped demonstrate how alien it was to white settlers to be in that region.

Watch Shackleton's Captain first

Attached: 1559989403775.jpg (1138x4000, 1.48M)

well it sounds like that stuff is well integrated in the novel while in the show the mostly material story rejects the supernatural parts forced onto it, especially since in the ways presented they're so unnecessary and could've been completely replaced with the sailor's superstitions and delusion warping the otherwise natural happenings to seem otherworldly, leaving the show with much better integrity

>saved one girls timestamped boobs
post

They could’ve been yes, but I still enjoyed the show. Still one of the better seasons of tv in recent years and I loved the casting of pretty much every character. It was well shot and the set design and costumes were very good. The story was still enjoyable.

That would be very disrespectful to a fellow Terrorchad

Pretty based description I have to be honest.

>no mention of das Boot, the essential despair boatkino
what a shit list

Titanic doesn't count because it's not even treated like a boat until the sinking.
It's like a grand hotel the rest of time with fancy dresses. Of course women love that.

In Lawrence of Arabia they "sail" the desert on camels.

yep, they showed up in droves for Chernobyl and not because of the female scientist.

Pseuds are possibly the worst disease on all the boards, even worse than plebs.

I hate how Fortitude was at first really good, and then totally fell apart in the last 2 episodes

Overall, it was okay.
I was kind of disappointed it stayed on the whodunit intrigue way too much and later introducing that dumb immortal pharma-bitch plot instead of, i'unno, going full blown epidemic a-la 28 days later or something.

Imagine thinking both of these shows have "little dialogue". Fuck off, you brain dead cunt.

In the book why didn't the men hickey brought with him kill him when they realized that he was going to keep killing them to feed each other? They had the numbers and they didn't really need him to make their way back to terror.

Psychos can be really charismatic and would be best adapted to convince people to kill and eat someone, giving them the upper hand to survive such situations?

Always makes me wonder about all those shipwrecked stories where they were stuck in a boat and ended up drawing lots and eating someone. Did they really draw lots, or did they get convinced by a psycho to simply pick the fattest or weakest?

In the book he had Magnus backing him up and a gun. I think he had both in the show as well.

What was the relantionship between these two?
They appeared out of nowhere I think only on ep. 4 or 5 and they looked like father and son

Non-psycho buggerers who loved each other, to contrast with Hickey's predatory buggery.

on that note, was hickey actually gay or just an opportunist? sometimes it seemed like he sincerely liked gibson but that could just be manipulation

Attached: 7CA996E8-2168-4BDD-9C4E-090F8B0BBB8A.gif (540x300, 2.88M)

The guy was his pseudo father figure.

>ah, this looks like a solid show
>a GAY is getting whipped, on his BUTT, and that's BAD!
Into the trash it goes

Opportunist. I suppose there's a question whether all psychos are up for anything to further their plans, or whether they're also ruled by their sexuality, like Patrick Bateman not fucking the redhead dude. But there was definitely no moment of sincerely liking the dude.

Is that what happened to the real crew? Were they attacked by inuits in bear suits?

>a regular polarbear hunting them down isn’t equally retarded hollywood

My mother is an actual pleb but a few days after we finished watching this she said to me that she was still thinking about/dwelling on the emotions of it. This is major for a woman who spends her evenings watching all the trash superhero shows and ncis and other procedurals.

The real crew actually found the passage but it was all hushed down and they were made to live out the rest of their lives under false names. Because the majesty of the legend was worth more to the Crown than the world knowing there's an actual passage.

Oh, I didn't know that. But was the supernatural bear real?

I like trains and boat movies. Should I change my gender?

I wouldn't worry about it.

i think you're in the minority with that opinion. plot aside, it looked terrible and ruined the otherwise fantastically immersive setting the show exuded

>Should I change my gender?
I bet you wish you could

ntayrt but yes i do, i unironically think males are superior and feel like being female is a curse and i’m trapped in this awful form. unfortunately i’m also relatively sane so i understand i can never change my sex

you'll be fine tomboys that don't hate men are a hot commodity. just start by getting comfortable with the cards you were dealt.

They were bum chums in the book but I don't think they are in the show

Haha.. no.
Women can only relate to women and children. My wife would prefer to watch children's movies.

Hickey was pure psychopath, his sexuality was motivated from boredom and a need to control.

have sex

True Detective season 1 is the single best season in all of television.

>trains
No that's just autism you've got.

based and antinatalistpilled

there was no monster.
They went insane and had lead poisoning.

I finished it a few days ago and thought it was good but I dunno, it was like it couldn't decide whether it was about the voyage and the men or about some Inuit supernatural legend thing.
If it's about Tuunbaq and Lady Silence, make it about them. If it's not, the lead poisoning and the men going crazy as they starved would have been enough to make it creepy kino and so Lady Silence and the magic bear were unnecessary.
In fact it would have been creepier with no Lady Silence and shaman shit but still with something like the Tuunbaq to represent what a polar bear looks like to a bunch of half-starved delirious poisoning victims.

I thought it was boring and the CGI was bad. I was hoping to see more about people starving and coping with the environment, not getting eaten by evil monster bear and evil gay sociopath

then why did they have an unpoisoned outsider confirming the monster's presence? Would have made more sense without Lady Silence (unless she was a figment of everyone's imagination)

Weigh in

strawpoll.me/18154835

yeah this. the giant monster bear was gay and made lose interest quickly

Is the story about Ross' expedition real?
I mean the one Blanky tells to Fitzjames

cause it's too slow paced. I fell asleep several times per episode. good show though. but not the best.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_expedition

I think that's the wrong Ross.
I don't remember the conversation user is referring to, but from the wiki
> Blanky was a veteran of polar exploration, having previously participated in William Parry's attempt to reach the North Pole and John Ross's search for the Northwest Passage

maybe this one
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ross_(Royal_Navy_officer)#1818:_First_Arctic_expedition

Attached: Admirality.png (1788x1620, 1.59M)

So what did Blanky accomplish by going off alone covered in forks? I thought he said he could drive manbearpig onto they ice?

Drive it onto the ice as in leading it away from the group.

Doesn't matter if Tuunbuq had been just a very large bear or not, its role in the themes and subtext of the show would be the same, in the end the monster isn't very significant compared to the hubris of the explorers and what they experienced.

When it ate him, one or more forks tore the shit out of it's digestive system. There's a chance it died because of internal bleeding, though it's ambiguous.

Buy some time and create some indigestion for the beast.
>What took you so fooking long? YEHEAHEHEHE!

the forks were so it would get them lodged inside it and hopefully that would harm it, between that, goodsir's poison and the big chain at the end the monster basically kills itself by continuing to eat the explorers.

They hurt it at times but they don't really beat it directly, it dies just through contact with them

this man will save television

Attached: BCFF5CA3-29F2-41F8-9B9F-499EDFDD7146.jpg (1100x1650, 552K)

It actually died because it consumed Hickey's soul, which was the real poison amongst the crew.

I thought he choked with Hickey's half body and the rest of the men chained together

>going from kino to kino
How does he do it?

This and the chain being the chain of command that trapped them all there to die in the first place, it being equally bad.

I heard that's in the book, but i don't remember seeing the "soul eating" effect when it ate hickey, like when it are whatshisname at the camp. But yeah, I agree also that

Again yeah: eating the explorers, prob combined with the wounds they inflict on it, kill it. you can read that as being about colonialism in north america, about the rational modern world destroying the pre-modern superstitious world, or whatever

didnt think of that before but i like it

that's a juicy take

This is how they found a sailor in real life
We'll never know what happened

>that final Goodsir chapter

Attached: 1548175673816.gif (540x303, 2.94M)

Croxier mentioned to him in like episode 1 how "close" was a terrible thing (being "close" to success etc)

I had to look it up but the gold chains thing is based on an innuit account of finding one of the bodies years later with a gold pocket watch chain fastened to his earings. Nobody knows, just creepy:

canadianmysteries.ca/sites/franklin/archive/text/TooktoocheerGilder_en.htm

>One body — the one with flesh on — had a gold chain fastened to gold ear-rings, and a gold hunting-case watch with engine-turned engraving attached to the chain, and hanging down about the waist. He said when he pulled the chain it pulled the head up by the ears.

Re-watched it, and the bit in episode 1 where he consoles the dying kid by saying that when he dies he will see angels, made his dying visions make more sense

>Titanic has a ship in it, it's not really a ''boat movie'', because it lacks the camaraderie, or the adventure factor to it.
All the scenes with the captain, and those musicians on the deck say otherwise.

because its just not that good.

They also like to pretend to be historians on their blogs, so having a show with cute male actors in military uniform only increases their interest

Yes, but they're hardly the focus of the story. The Titanic is more like a hotel than a ship. The captain and the band scenes are good and all, but the movie isn't about them, sadly.
You could have a titanic movie about the crew, captain and telegraph operators to show their bravery in face of certain death.

Fag shit ruined it

It was really good, very strong opening episodes, but it was definitely like 1-2 episodes too long.

>booksir is disgusting to look at
>somalian child tier skinniness
>showsir is likeable

No, it never dies in the book. It’s genuinely unkillable and can not be stopped even by its creator which was literally an Inuit god. It does however flatly refuse to eat Hickey, and Hickey dies from fright as it examines him. It smells him and walks off in complete disgust. Crozier becomes a shaman.

the “fag shit” was fine. situational homosexuality is a real phenomenon. if you’re stranded in the arctic surrounded by men then you’ll make do with what you have

delet

Because it turns to shit after two/three episodes.

what's the timestamp I should stop at before my kino experience turns to anti-kino?

9, 6 and 3 are absolutely kino. 10 (finale) is very good. the rest are still better than your average overpraised TV.

The moment of your birth

From the thumbnail I thought it was fanart of Hickey shitting on the bed

This. The quality is so high at first, then really plummets. I don't remember exactly when it happens, but I think it coincides with Ciaran Hinds' departure.

One of my favorite part of the show is the relationship between Crozier and Fitzjames: in the beginning Crozier could barely stand him, then he hated him and at the end they became brothers.
I guess I felt the same about Fitzjames as well, I didn't like him at first but then he grew on me and his death hit me more than the others

my parents were cruel and opted for circumcision rather than euthanasia

Hinds funeral was the high point of the show.

I agree that the tent scene with Fitzjames and Crozier was the best. Menzies acted it perfectly

Attached: brothers.jpg (1280x720, 62K)

So he did actually shit on the bed, they never mentioned it after and we never knew the consequences

Pro tip: this show is not a masterpiece despite lonely autists on the Internet saying so

Attached: fitzjames.png (1920x1080, 1.43M)

It displays white male heroics. That's enough for me these days.

Sadness and desperation kino

Wasn't there some practice among sailors to have enough jewelry on you to pay for your funeral in case someone finds your corpse?
Might be something like that.

Either that or just cheeky cannibals fucking around.

Attached: 1490253621287.jpg (1024x1024, 182K)

If they kept all the corpses as food could they have survived?

>You could have a titanic movie about the crew, captain and telegraph operators to show their bravery in face of certain death.
Make it about the generator-room lads who stayed in the bowels of the ship in the certain knowledge that they'd die, dedicating the last moments of their lives making sure the electricity would last for as long as possible, to help the passengers find their ways in corridors that would otherwise be pitch-black, and for the telegraph boys to be able to communicate for longer. Fuck the captain, he doesn't deserve to be in the same movie as those lads.

The chain of command.

FOR THE LAST TIME, GET. BACK. HERE. MISTER. HICKEY!

Attached: 1542669431782.png (367x488, 123K)

Probably not. Apparently humans eating human flesh is unhealthy. There's a high chance of developing some sort of infection that causes holes in the brain to develop.

what was the meaning of Goodsir's visions as he died?

Attached: 1524173989327.jpg (1222x1280, 287K)

god i hate franklin so much

If you are talking about the prions shit, that only applies if you eat peoples' (or monkeys') brains.

I decided to check this show out and for whatever reason the link I chose was actually the finale...I had no fucking clue what was going on other then they were hungry and the creature they fought at the end looked retarded, I later chose a different link and watched the first actual episode but haven't watched any further yet, did I completely ruin the series?

It wasn't really to pay for your funeral, in most cases. The fact was that sailors didn't have a use for banks since if they'd lodged their money in England it would be of no use to them when having a day off on the other side of the world. Some ships would act as banks for the sailors, but then they'd end up with lots of coin when switching ships etc. So they'd end up with a lot of coin if they were successful/frugal, but it wouldn't be very safe for them to keep bags of coin among their belongings, and neither do you carry that much upon your person every day. What you did was you bought jewellery and finery, so that your riches would always be on your person where you could be safe in the knowledge it couldn't be stolen. Rings worn as you sleep would safe. As a bonus the person finding your corpse could take your shit and at least give you a decent funeral as thanks. A lot of travellers of little means(if you don't have enough money stashed with them the banks won't accommodate in your travels) or just people with no name to them would do the same on land.

There was a similar reason why women always had so much jewellery bought for them as presents through history. Because pretty much everything a woman "owned" was actually owned by her husband, except for jewellery which was firmly hers in the eyes of the law/custom. So if the husband decided to fuck off and leave you on your own, or in more recent years divorce you, then he could take the house and most your shit, but you'd be able to live off of the expensive jewellery that he couldn't touch. I think they also had an easier time keeping husbands from drinking or gambling away jewellery, since there'd be legal recourse for them "stealing" the jewellery by selling them behind her back, so a wife could make sure that even if her husband was a drunkard they'd at least be able to sell some jewellery to keep the house or buy food. So in that case it was like an insurance against harder times.

They were dying from lead poisoning. Any disease that comes from eating human flesh wouldn't be anywhere near as much trouble as the fact that by eating the lead poisoned flesh they'd only poison themselves further.

In the first episode he told the kid that when you die you see visions of things you love or cherish, like angels for Christians. It bothered him that the kid died hallucinating something horrible, and when Goodsir kills himself he imagines plants because he loves nature.

How the fuck is it even possible to watch the finale by accident? It's still worth watching from the beginning.

That's a common occurrence with the HBONordic streaming service, or at least was. Because the eggheads thought that the UI should start you off on the very latest episode, rather than episode one of season one. Or at least that's how it was. When I clicked to play Banshee they started me off on the premiere of the third season or something and I thought it was a cold open when they hunted down and executed some guy. There was no "play next episode" either, you had to go back to the main menu, click the show, change the season to the one you're on and then click the next episode.

I've genuinely never seen a worse UI than what HBONordic started off with, and even all these years later it's way shittier than Netflix.

This is actually not in the book at all and Fitzjames is a minor character who receives almost no characterization. It wasn’t known at the time of writing he was illegitimate and I don’t think Simmons knew what to do with him. Definitely an improvement, because all he does in the book is die, and even that is offscreen.

>Innocent native literally dies from contact with filthy anglos
So deep and redpilled

Ultimate pleb filter. The show would not be complete or the same without the tuunbaq

Plant, mineral, and animal.
A mind of science and someone who sought to comfort/heal, comforting himself on his way out.

femanon here, loved the show but the book was better desu

The young pope exists

This

They should have put the scene in the show where they fall asleep at the cairn

There are probably a bunch ally good deleted scenes and bloopers no one will ever see because of the shitty home release.

The steam link I chose was obviously not linked to the right episode, it happens from time to time if the website hosting it has the wrong link

That’s like their only scene together that is memorable at all. It would’ve been cool to see but I think the show did a MUCH better job of showing the two leads together when the book mostly ignored it.

>Are normies just too dumb to understand it? Is it females?
Both. I can't believe the shit that was Chernobyl is actually considered a masterpiece. It had like 2 good episodes, solely carried by Dyatlov, and that was it.
