>Paul Thomas Anderson has two films in the top ten of the decade >Radiohead has three albums in the top ten greatest ever recorded on rym
Can we talk about how these absolute hacks manage to fool midwits so easily? Whats the formula exactly; cause none of those works are objectively beyond mediocre, but they have some phony quality that somehow fools people
I think it's part of a desire to fit in while being recognized as someone who likes certain good things as opposed to bad things. These are the types of people who could never admit to their friends that they also enjoy listening to AOR band 'Stone Fury', it just doesn't fit.
Kid A and Amnesiac were the only good albums Radiohead ever did.
Adrian Cook
people actually responded to this fucking bait sage
Luis Williams
pta has never genuinely explored a theme in his life. its all style no substance. "its about... I dont know but it waz epic"
it tricked you. view it again and see what a non entity it is. all style no substance. pta is an idiot who believed his own reviews.
I like kid A but three, in the top ten in the history of music ahahahahah
Tyler Lee
hes mediocre. r/books tier. where is gilliam on these lists. cronenberg. bazz luhrmann. almodovar ones actually who understand the function of cinema, of theater, of entertainment. pta believes his own reviews. a very typical inauthentic misanthrope desperate for the canon fuck even shyamalan blows him out of the water
Daniel Adams
>view it again and see what a non entity it is I've seen it over 10 times, it has one of the strongest scenes I've ever seen that makes me tear up every time I see it - Jonny's score and DDL's acting meld perfectly
Ayden Baker
They're both entry level patricians, they attract a lot of plebs who think that, by liking those authors, have a superior taste to other plebs
Landon Clark
idk man Ingmar fucking Bergman singled out PTA as an example of good american cinema
Connor Turner
the whole movie makes no sense a manbaby abusive psycho then a lot of it mocks and laughs at him but then why does he love him so much? why give him such a worshiping deboted wife? why enable him? pta is both a misanthrope and empath at the same time? wtf how about poison that fucker to death all his movies sre what a fucked up manchild he and his protags are and the world should just deal how bout naw
Nathaniel Long
I knew you would go there I prefer that david foster wallace said hes a grad student tier amateur also directors will never compliment their superiors
Benjamin Gutierrez
I dont really like DFW and he doesn't make films
Oliver Sanchez
This criticism does not make sense.
Michael Mitchell
if you don't understand why the 2 main characters fit perfectly for each other then you didn't get the movie at all
Liam Wood
>phantom thread is objectively a top 5 best film of the decade It's not. It's a deeply flawed film. The last act doesn't hold up. Much of the plot is confused and unsatisfying, although it does make sense on some level.
What it has though, are elements which are on par with the very best films. It shows enormous potential, and shows PTA as a clearly masterful filmmaker. But it is not a perfect film as a whole and so it cannot be at the top. I think it is a worse film than many of his previous films, but has elements in it superior to any element from those. The first half is certainly the best first half of a film he has ever made, and up there with any film.
I hope that his best film is still to come. His actual masterpiece.
James Ross
>Luhrmann No. Basically your criticism is that you are brainlet retard who didn't get the film.
Dominic Brown
Both Phantom Thread and The Master are up there with the best 2010s movies. Also, There Will Be Blood, Master, Phantom Thread > Punch Drunk Love, Boogie Nights, Magnolia PTA has only gotten better with age.
Christopher Williams
I liked The Master less than I wanted to or thought that I should. I think maybe it's that I find Juaqim Phoenix's detached cynicism which he brings to all his performances now, joyless. Hoffman who is one of my favourite actors was a terrible foil for him. It was like they were sharing the same ethos and it was a deeply unattractive one. Hoffman's character by himself was well weighted, but as a counter to Phoenix, was not enough. I can stand deeply unattractive protagonists, but honest ones, ones whose humanity still shines through. I think Juaqim puts up this barrier between him and the audience.
He's insanely talented and fascinating to watch onscreen but he doesn't truely show his soul, which is aggravated by the fact that he is always pretending to.
Kevin Stewart
nope that is my criticism for PTA the moment you give his work any thought its either nonsensical or batshit insane or we can just say 'misanthrope' like all of genX
youre closer at least
Jonathan Price
Definitely give it a rewatch or two. I didn't like it on my first viewing either. Both Joaquin and PSH are at the top of their game. PTA's best film by a long shot.
Carter Hill
Yeah, I should, I've been meaning to. I've had enough of juaqin though. After You Where Never Really Here, Sisters Brothers, and Mary Magdeline, i'm sick of him.
He is so talented but he's utterly squandering the talent.
Robert Nguyen
maybe you just have shit taste, did that ever cross your mind?
Zachary Smith
boogie and mag are fun since he was a coke addict. I can sort of forgive bergman because he didnt know all that ironic LA soul searching shit was not a frame. it wasnt art it was life. so I can see why its fascinating to the europeans in subtitle or whatever. but dfw read him like a book. saw through the midwit. the lapses of logic. the shortcuts all the neo kubrick stuff is embarrassing beyond belief. he begun believing in his own reviews. ugh you all make me sick
Isaiah Diaz
what the fuck are you talking about bro
Jason Thomas
DFW criticised PTA? DFW was his english teacher for a semester at Emerson right? Also I think DFW really liked Boogie nights.
Camden Reed
I'll take Tarantino over PTA any day of the week if I want to see genuine craft
Angel Hughes
>bazz luhrmann jesus fucking christ, you shit on PTA and yet you defend that atrocious clown?
Chase Nguyen
it's not that they're good it's that everything else is so shitty today.
Josiah Martinez
>The last act doesn't hold up. >Much of the plot is confused and unsatisfying, although it does make sense on some level. What the fuck are you on about
Alexander Thomas
fraud pretend misanthrope look how much hes fucking up cinema and ruining the habits of directors. the favourite was idolizing him read armond fools
Eli Brown
Armond White is a retard.
Levi Murphy
No, i form my own opinions. I rarely read any criticism of film. I certainly don't use someone else's writing as a justification for my own lack of taste. If you can't understand and express why you don't like something yourself, with your own ideas, you should stick to saying that you don't like it, rather than that it's bad.
Michael Walker
>if I act like I'm too smart for the stuff smart people like, that will make me the smartest of them all and then daddy will finally pay attention to me: the thread
Gavin Smith
>muh "dishonest" filmmaking Literal nonsense.
Jonathan Sullivan
baz is great. he 'gets' it. dude advanced cinema by a generation. he did shakespeare and the great gatsby and moulin rouge. paul is trying to write gatsby instead to the screen. good luck with that.
Luis Diaz
I was absolutely engrossed in the film until after the ballroom scene at new years. And maybe it began to drop off even after she poisons him the first time.
It was a little bit much like he had stretched the story around armchair psychology to do with mother issues. I don't see why a character has to be 'understood'. I think the film tries to hard to explain why the characters are the way that they are. And has the somewhat fanciful armchair psychology inform the plot too much.
The basic idea was interesting but it was too heavy handed and poorly executed.
In general, the second half, and especially the last quarter of the film, are not as good as the first half. Which is alone, a masterpiece.
Dylan Perez
I don't know if you are ESL or what but none of what you say even makes sense on a basic level. Either way, Luhrmann is an absolute hack and one of the worst filmmakers in the history of cinema, his stuff absolutely screams indulgence and lack of substance so that makes you the most egregious hypocrite in history. He turned Romeo And Juliet into a fucking Looney Tunes cartoon, thought it would be a good idea to have fucking Skrillex on the soundtrack for his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's most popular work - personally I prefer Tender Is The Night but to each their own - and is responsible for Moulin Rouge, one of the most insufferable films ever made. You also said something about liking Shyamalan. You're an idiot, pure and simple. Don't make threads anymore.
Jordan Ortiz
Exploring his devotion to his mother which has been looming over the characters for the entire film and doing so through a clever mechanism of him being sick and delirious is "heavy handed" and "armchair psychology". Mmkay. Also Alma's dark and manipulative turn towards the end of the film was one of the better parts of the movie. It's a brilliant portrayal of a strange, sick, codependent relationship. Just because you had some movie in your head that turned out not to be what you were actually watching does not mean that PTA stumbled.
Jayden Wood
I bet both my testicles on OP being an ape hop cuck who thinks kanye is a genius and is the most important person to ever grace us mortals
Get on my level fool Shyamalan is a god to PTA sincerity. authenticity. genuine faith. the most intuitive master of thrillers since the master of suspense. bergman also loved the sixth sense he knew shyamalan has the same grasp of the human unconscious as he did.
re: Baz I guess its the prob I see your crit as valid against PTA. a cartoon. insufferable. he is a misanthrope like all of his generation. tarantino, fincher, etc...
baz is groundbreaking and rewrote the form. I am over here with the multi thousand year tradition of theater and storytelling with the audience. I dont know where the rest of you are, I think cannes fucked with you a bit much
Nathaniel Fisher
Yes but he didn't like Magnolia at all. But I think PTA didn't really like Magnolia much either, he just had to make it to work out his massive daddy issues, which he basically admitted with Marc Maron. I really hope Joe Rogan interviews him someday.
Also, all the pedophile and Freemasonry stuff in Magnolia makes me really concerned for PTA, considering he claimed it was about his father.
Zachary Garcia
re: cannes, gaspar noe, haneke, anderson. all that tripe where hollow misanthropy = art
Jack King
>never genuinely explored a theme in his life please learn the definition of "theme" before you delineate such a philistine perspective. You'll make a fool of yourself.
Angel Turner
am I the only one who thinks boogie nights is one of his bests as well?
Yes, it's phenomenal. Easily in his top 3. It's great because it really isn't very "fun". It sets itself up like it's going to be, but it's too sobering and painful to really enjoy. In a sense it's like an orgasm, all the build up but in the end just disappointment and shame. The themes of cults, southern California, family issues, and fame become central to nearly all of his films. Punch Drunk Love is very underrated as well.
Cameron Rodriguez
no my point is there is a huge distinction to a bergman or cronenberg who genuinely think through and explore theme to a pta who wails themes at the top of his lungs. as the other guy said in the ending if phantom thread alma literally explains the ending in dialog. I will agree he came a little closer to something in that film but it is still overall nonsensical stoner shit.
Jason Ward
Yeah that interview is great. Watch the behind the scenes Magnolia doc if you haven't. It's on youtube.
Lucas Taylor
The Master genuinely touched me. One of the most genuine movies ever made.
James Hall
>I am over here with the multi thousand year tradition of theater and storytelling with the audience. Once again, barely intelligible nonsense without a shred of legitimacy or actual information backing it up.
>filmmakers that hurt my fee fees do not count as legitimate artists go fuck yourself, you are a particularly irritating breed of moron
Brayden Reed
>muh depressed hack writer called him bad
Kayden Myers
NO IT'S NOT IT'S DISHONEST BECAUSE ARMOND WHITE TOLD ME SO
Noah Edwards
>has never read any of DFW's books because they're too long
Evan Kelly
ah I see the problem, you are stuck in the past and overly obsessed with being rooted in antiquated traditions, so modern filmmakers who actually push boundaries and do new things are "dishonest" to you because they actually challenge you. Are you religious by any chance?
Benjamin Richardson
You don't get to only defend Shyamalan's couple of good films and pretend all of his later disasters didn't happen. He's responsible for some of the worst films of the past two decades and has made a number of things objectively worse than anything PTA has ever done, ever.
>baz is groundbreaking and rewrote the form. Explain how. I'll wait.
Nicholas Gonzalez
>has the same grasp of the human unconscious as he did. you criticize PTA for not having substance while saying vapid bullshit like that? that's like the definition of something that sounds cool but doesn't mean anything if you think about it for more than five seconds
Landon Price
I really don't get if Yea Forums wanking The Master as a masterpiece is a metajoke or not. I watched it years ago and it was ok, didn't find it impressive at all.
>but he doesn't truely show his soul I will believe that actor really show his soul in a movie only if he'll go full method and commit suicide after
Blake Myers
it is definitely not antiquated, it is universally resonant. It is why when they combine it into theater it's always great. like the works of greenaway. even wes anderson's 'grand budapest hotel' nailed it
when we talk about pushing the form it is cinema of the 'interior'. hitchcock's vertigo or bergman's persona. I keep mentioning cronenberg. I loved Shame by steve mcqueen.
PTA at least scribbles it down on the master like a homework assignment. it is even in the poster in the OP what he's doing exploring the fragments of the shattered psyche and sexuality. but then it's so damn immature. he's horny and a dog. I never saw enough behind that movie. It's still his social misfit deviants acting crazy in epic performances. I don't see what the rest of you are seeing. It has it all on paper but then doesn't do anything with it.
signs, the village, and split are also amazing too the mermaid one is pretty fun shyamalan is so underrated. he is like hitchcock that he's not writing for the canon, he's writing for the audience. the best ones don't give a fuck about the canon. that is why 'mad max: fury road' is winning best of the decade everywhere.
baz is amazing fool, he is the voice of a generation. while they were doing the gun to the head new wave shit that bonnie and clyde and godard already did decades ago he was making all the madness coherent . he was like bollywood in the US. even when oliver stone did it in natural born killers was pretty cool, because he was a boomer and boomers don't know what the fuck irony is. I love Stone in the 90s if you want someone doing great american novels to the screen look at Stone not PTA.
Michael Adams
The cinematography and acting are superb, otherwise it’s alright
Adam Wood
Absolute shit taste
Blake Adams
>baz is the voice of a generation >baz luhrmann >the voice of a generation
don’t you have a pride march to attend?
Evan Thompson
dude this is 2010, nothing forecasted this decade of cinema more: youtube.com/watch?v=rARN6agiW7o look how its all in this 3 dimensional digital 50s amazing it's probably even better than the novel cause it don't give a fuck about the literary it just points the camera at their faces like a dumb shit if you saw what I saw you would worship this movie it does everything
Ryan Mitchell
youtube.com/watch?v=LVLjp3_MQIw moulin rouge my favorite though I would kill to live inside these magical worlds of theater, drama, colors
these movies that are so austere and misanthropic, what does it do for you? I will never understand.
leaving now, and dont you dare talk shit about baz friends
Kevin Brown
I disagree with you, but I respect you for sticking to your guns. I only wish you were less illiterate because you fucked up a lot of sentences in the thread, making your meaning pretty vague
Michael Ortiz
This. Its the 21st century Emperors New Clothes
William Carter
>does not mean that PTA stumbled. So the entire film was middling then? Or how else do you explain the lukewarm reception it had in general. I think my interpretation is more generous to the filmmaker than yours.
Tyler Clark
Guarantee you think John Wick is "epic" Fuck off.
Connor Ramirez
i thought you didn't know what the FUCK you were talking about till you mentioned stone fury.
Levi Nelson
I like PTA, but 20 minutes into The Master I already recognized the plot was not the main focus, and he was going for a different approach to filmmaking that I didn't care about in the slightest. Radiohead has some good songs, but on the whole they make depressing music for depressing people.
Jeremiah Watson
>depressing people Isn't this purely subjective and says more about you than the people who like radiohead? For example, I find really happy functional people depressing. Do you mean depressed people?
i appreciate the master not because it's great picture, but because PTA acted as the master himself, tricking his fans into enjoying the film. hoffman's character is anderson's self-insert.
Evan Foster
The fact that In Rainbows is at #9, KID A is at #3 and OKC is at #1 hurts me. I’m also a Radiohead fan, but come the fuck on.
Henry Wright
After watching all his movies I got the idea that pta believes his own reviews, do you agree OP?
Brayden Torres
There is a differnce between not perfect or not as good as they say with completely mediocre
Radiohead is anything but mediocre tho I agree there are better
Jaxson Rodriguez
name your top movie and album of the decade, fag
William Phillips
go back
Adrian Davis
The Master is the best movie of the 2010s though, sorry your favourite Avengers flick didn't make the top 10000
Andrew Miller
movies: the sea of trees the great gatsby the zero theorem grand budapest hotel shame christine
aotd: atrocity exhibition
Angel Lee
i dont like most of these, but at least they show that you're a real person with a unique taste unlike all the mindless drones itt that wank at the most embarassing filmmaker of the last 20 years i hope you make them seethe some more
David Jackson
In rainbows
Luke Ortiz
good bait
Evan Green
>the most embarassing filmmaker of the last 20 years Have sex
Xavier Powell
i forgot split shyamalan > pta history will always favor authenticity
yeah that part we can agree every single thing he makes is about psycho manbabies in some epic performance. often they shout catch phrases. dude needs a new angle fast. you know how you can tell is he gets the same rating as marvel movies. if he was goat his films would be getting 50% on rottentomatoes like kubricks, only to be reappraised years after oh whats that shyamalan gets trashed every film? hmm
We are talking about OP. Him even mentioning rym reeks of Yea Forums, and him not only disliking radiohead but also calling them hacks kinda locks down what he listens to.
