No, Balogna Pony dub is in legal hell which is why it never got released stateside. Netflix is doing a complete redub with an entirely new cast. Morbid curiosity will make me watch it this way, but of course every first time viewer should watch it in Japanese.

I would watch some Kubrick, maybe some other Gainax shows. Their later stuff was more accessible, FLCL is my favorite but Evangelion is much deeper. 2001 and A Clockwork Orange are basically required viewing before you watch. Other Gainax stuff like Gurren Lagaan and FLCL can definitely help you grasp the themes.

It will be the entire original series plus both movies. Not any of that Rebuild shit though.

I haven't watched either one in a decade or more, but I definitely felt there were similarities, both in the general zaniness of the humor, and thematically.

You're right that the pacing of Abenobashi is slower than FLCL (although, what isn't?). but the anime-specific tropes thing is there with FLCL, too. If anything, FLCL gets into even more obscure territory at points, it's just that the pace is so frenetic that you may not dwell on it long enough to even go "huh?" before you're on to the next thing.

Like I said, it's not 100% the same, but it's worth trying for anybody that made it through FLCL without being completely put off.

Another, more recent one, would be Kill la Kill, given the staff overlap from FLCL.

That's a hard thing to explain. I'm actually not sure how to explain it myself without it sounding kinda pretentious or giving you the wrong idea.

Honestly I'd say just watch it. I'd also say don't expect the big definition of mecha anime but think of it as a character drama and how they all interact with eachother.

Kaworu and Shinji are soulmates though (sometimes literally like in Anima that has a lore that's closely followed in Rebuild). Shinji was always going to fall for Kaworu, before they decided to kill off Rei II and have Asuka MIA to make him focus on his own sense of loss. The entire episode was going to be about Shinji falling for Kaworu and understanding Misato's grief over Kaji because he too lost the only person he fell in love with (something he never experienced before Kaworu).

To understand Shinji/Kaworu, you need to get two things:
a) Shinji was originally going to be a FEMALE CHARACTER. Sadamoto, not Anno, changed that. That's why Shinji acts like a shoujo heroine. Because he fucking was meant to be a girl. All because Sadamoto didn't want to draw another Nadia.
b) Shinji was going to be much younger too, after the genderswap, he was going to be an elementary school kid. A lot of the early concepts were written as him as a 11 or so years old, including Kaworu, who then became a boy of his age who was possessed by an angel who spoke through him (not an angel yet).

This changed until Anno wanted to do a legitimate homoromantic storyline because Kaworu represented his repressed crush on Utena director. Everyone knows this. Anno even made a doujin about that guy. Like ALL the romantic shit in Eva, it goes south. All the romance in Eva ends the same, Yui and Gendo, Misato and Kaji, Kaworu is very similar to Kaji and Yui in essence for a reason. So he was this tragic angel guy Shinji fell in love and had to kill on his request because he lost control (that was the plan originally before the whole Asuka's and Rei's demises metaphorical or not took a toll on Shinji so they had to make Kaworu more affectionate to him - he originally rejected Shinji after Shinji confessed; draft two was closer to the episode and featuring them kissing but they weren't sure they wouldn't get censored so they opted to be less plain in your sight). That was good, Anno admitting Kaworu is a boy and had to be a boy, but now after years, he chickened out, he made Tabris = Adam, and Adam is more identified with female than male, and sets Kaworu as officially "genderless".
