I think vidme got the closest to having a good alternate platform, but they put huge restrictions on who could upload and how much they could upload because hosting videos uses a fuckton of resources. Google has the money to let random joes upload hundreds of gigs every minute of every day. Unless someone else can do that on top of pulling big names to the platform to create a starting population, then youtube will always be king (in other words youtube will always be king).

Only tech behemoths can keep something like it going long term. Considering the way the major tech companies operate, I don't really see a reason for Apple or Microsoft to even attempt to compete with Google on this.

Search is nothing compared to YouTube in terms of infrastructure. Storage management, data centers across the planet, software, legal issues... why would Microsoft, Apple or Amazon want to invest that into competing with another platform that is already incredibly popular yet still unprofitable.

Youtube had growing pains of what to do about copyright restrictions in the late 2000s. They were likely able to overcome it by being bought by google and largely becoming part of the system. An insurgent alternative video site would get litigated out of town.

In the beginning, YouTube was just a modest site of weirdos posting amateur videos that couldn't go over 10 or 20 minutes IIRC and since there were no ads it wasn't very profitable. Then Google came in with all their money and resources, bought out YouTube, revamped it over the years into what it is today.

So anyone who wants to do something like YouTube has to start on the ground level like YouTube did, only they aren't going to get big tech knocking, because big tech has already bought out everything. But if big tech were to buy out a new video service, they would bring in all of their globalist rules. No big company wants to be associated with what the public eye considers hate speech, etc, etc.

TL;DR

If you want a wild west video service, you have to accept the old school rules of streaming. No advertisements mean no money, smaller servers lead to upload issues and bandwidth problems (see what is happening to BitChute now), and you are probably not going to reach too many people. But you will have some degree of freedom, at least.

Youtube operates on a massive loss. 1.3 billion videos a year, right? That's an obscene amount of server hosting. As such, it's supported mainly as a form to control what the people see. No business would actively support such a money sink, youtube is literally too big to run as one company, it would destroy even the biggest firms. Google loses tons of money on it as is. On top of being a free service to most consumers as well. I think there's a good saying here, if the product is free, you're the product.
