I think it's Hamlet syndrome. Hamlet is the most famous and most critically analysed of all Shakespeare's plays. It's weird and disjointed and the main character's actions don't make a lot of sense. It could be genius writing that we still don't understand, or at least there still isn't a consensus on. It could be Shakespeare trying to reflect real life where things don't always have a reason or logic to them. Or it could be that it's just not a very good play, and we have all spent the past five hundred years analyzing something that Shakespeare pounded out in a hurry so he could move on to the next thing.

Every character in Mad Men is sort of like this. Their actions don't make a whole lot of sense, and the show kind of meanders around and picks interesting things up and drops them again like a rich lady off her tree on Xanax in a department store.*

It's complicated, but in it's simplest form, Joan's problem is that she wants to have her cake and eat it too.

She likes to flaunt her looks and reap the benefits of doing so, but also has a deep-seated inferiority complex about not being taken seriously as having anything to offer beyond just being pretty. She enjoys and seeks the attention her beauty commands, she's happy to stand on the pedestal it provides her, but then she acts like a victim when she tries to assert herself as someone to be taken seriously and people are quick to remind her that she hasn't ever actually DONE anything.

She was smart as shit and could easily run her own company, but society's roles for women at the time ('50s-early '60s) did not allow for her to succeed in that capacity, so she's pissed off because she's smart as fuck but gets no respect in meaningful ways.

That's why the series ends with her starting her own company: with society's views on women in the workplace changing, Joan finally has an environment in which to succeed on her own terms, rather than someone else's.

For one, there's the scene where Don's wife gets a shotgun and starts blasting her neighbor's prize pigeons (or whatever they were) apart.

There is literally nothing in her background that suggests she would be capable of carrying out such a psychopathic act of violence. Ozzy Osbourne is considered the prince of darkness because he once bit the head off a bat. One bat.
