It's not even like they'd need to shell out for chainmail or breastplates, only the Nilfgaardian nobility/officers wear plate armour, the standard infantry mooks wear brigandines which can be mocked up cheap as fuck with just textiles and metal studs because the armour plates are hidden under fabric in real life anyway.

There's literally no excuse for those shocking costumes.

Those plastic abominations would presumably be vacuum cast and either brittle as shit, requiring extras when they inevitably break it, or rubbery, requiring extra work to hide it. Or not, as the case may be.

Chainmail for extras can even be knitted easily and reused repeatedly, while armour for the main cast is worth putting effort in for.

I'm actually hyped for this just because I can't wait to see what an absolute trainwreck it's going to be.

The 3rd season of Star Trek (TOS) got the fucking show cancelled and the slashed budget was a major factor in it. Season 3 was a lot of ship in a bottle episodes or "they're filming a movie on the other side of the studio lot and we booked their set for a couple of days to shoot an episode" sort of stuff. Budget for writing staff also took a nosedive and the executive producer was replaced which led to a lot of quality people quitting.
