the whole story is about the battle between the father son concept of "the future/advancement" and "the past/preservation." Jack is "the average American man" being driven mad by the ghosts of the place he feels responsible to maintain. He decides that the son, the future, is wrong, and lashes out to try and destroy it.
Danny is science. Danny is humanity escaping the confines of the earth. He's the future, he's progressivism, etc. Jack is tradition, conservatism, a bastard child of American exceptionalism and manifest destiny in a world where those concepts are no longer real or attainable. He works and works and works for nothing, spiraling out into trying to destroy the things he can no longer control.
