The scene in the helicopter with the Party guy threatening to shoot the pilot - that was made up. So was the speech by the old Bolshevik at the plant telling everyone to hush it all up, so was the KGB scene, so was part of the court scene.

Basically, the show was 90% accurate, but the most significant points where it diverged from actual events was where they were inserting their political agenda, which almost makes it more insidious.

Notwithstanding the fact that failures on the part of the Soviet system contributed to the accident, it's real agenda-pushing stuff. Despite the fact that the acting, dialogue, directing etc. is top-knotch.

Chernobyl was... an accident. Yeah it was precisely the kind of accident you would expect to happen in the Soviet Union but that doesn't make it fully representative. It's as if Chernobyl has been used to wipe out all the Soviet Union's scientific achievements, from its pioneering space exploration to more abstract work in the fields of physics and chemistry to, yes, its decades of innovation in civilian nuclear power.

It seems particularly unseemly to dump on the Soviet Union like this, now that it's gone.

Thus, an emergency SCRAM initially increased the reaction rate in the lower part of the core as the graphite extensions of rods moving down in the reactor displaced water coolant. This behaviour was discovered when the initial insertion of control rods in another RBMK reactor at Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in 1983 induced a power spike, but as the subsequent SCRAM of that reactor was successful, the subsequently disseminated information had been deemed of little importance.

A few seconds into the SCRAM, a power spike did occur and the core overheated, causing some of the fuel rods to fracture, blocking the control rod columns and jamming the control rods at one-third insertion, with the graphite water-displacers still in the lower part of the core. Within three seconds the reactor output rose above 530 MW.[33]:31

All in all, given that there used to be dozens of RBMK reactors in the USSR, that's reasonable enough. Decomissioning nuclear power plants is a pain in the ass and really expensive, which is why Chernobyl only fully closed 20 years ago despite the accident.

Let's say that the range of control over the rate of reaction with completely boron rods would be 0 to 10 with 0 being no change and 10 being maximum reduction in rate of reaction
Tipping the rods with graphite gives you a range of about -3 to 9 instead. Because if you insert only the tips then you can outright accelerate the reaction. For a very low price you've given your reactor more range of control per control rod.

Nearly half of the control rods are graphite. That makes them better CONTROL rods. They can either decrease or increase reactivity greatly.

This disaster only happened because an arrogant fucktard like Dyatlov kept running the reactor with almost all control rods out and automatic failsafes disabled, DESPITE THE COMPUTER TELLING THEM TO SHUT IT DOWN.

Sure there was cover ups of the actual damage. The 2006 documentary does a great job at this. They even interview Gorbachev himself, he said he put the KGB on the engineers because he knew nobody was telling him the truth. Most of the cover up is the amount of people with illness. They say 50-150 or so but they estimate most of the miners (literally thousands) died. Even of the 500.000 cleanup workers 20,000 died within 20 years, and 200,000 are essentially disabled.

The coverup is shady for sure but just making this into some lazy Soviet shitslinging is odd in such a high production value show

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I watched the show with my family and we've spent the whole week talking about that kind of stuff. It helps that the creators have been relatively open about where they changed things and that there have been several English-language articles published criticizing its inaccuracies.

You try and get closer to the heater but you still can't see her. You swim closer. The glow grows brighter and you can swear it's inside your head. The water is no longer warm, but hot. You still have some air in you so you swim even closer, looking for her. Finally you see her feet circling around behind the heater. You get closer and The water gets hotter. Almost unbearably so. It's to be expected with the heater a couple of feet away. And yet you still can stop swimming around it. Are you even swimming? The metallic taste in your mouth. The blow glow. Your skin feels tight and tingly. You stop swimming but you keep moving. You are almost out of air but you still spin and turn around the heater. You notice the water flow of pumps somewhere moving you around and closer. Where's the surface. You start flailing and you grab onto something. A hot pipe? I wondered about why they didn't manage to hack together a solution to move most of the rubble from the roof like raking it with a beam pulled from afar or something like that. I suspect that they worried that it would collapse if you were going at it too hard, which would've made it a lot worse if the radioactive rubble ended up scattered inside the collapsed roof.
