I think everyone feels this.
For all it's technical qualities 2014 delivers a bad Godzilla movie in any of it's scales, it's not a story with actually something to say like 54 and Shin and it's not a fun monster-mash/monster movie. It's like a really pretty and well executed snooze-fest (reminder that the pacing of 2014 isn't as incredible as Yea Forums revisionism says it is, and the one admittedly 10/10 scene of Godzilla is all they have to defend the film)

KOTM, whose technical qualities should also be praised, is essentially a hype dumb monster-mash remake of Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. It has more bang for your temporal and literal buck.

There is a dedicated contingent of kaiju fans on Yea Forums who want very badly for this cinematic universe to succeed just because they're fanboys. There are also people here who are desperate for anything to dethrone the Disney/Marvel juggernaut. Though KotM is a bad bet for the latter group since it's functionally a Marvel movie and even if it did dethrone Marvel it would still continue to validate the Marvel formula.

2014 gets most things right but it badly miscast the main lead, and it is about 15 minutes too long(the unnecessary length is why the kaiju teasing doesn't work like the director intended and ended up blue balling the audience). These are the only two mistakes it made imo but they are pretty big ones that do hurt the movie.

One is a tight trailer about a group of people in a hostile place maybe being stalked by a giant monkey. You know what you're getting, it's visually distinct, and has actors you like, or at least know. KOTM's monsters look amazing, but the rest of the trailer is the same exploding buildings and clouds of dust you can see in a million other places, followed by a montage of people you kind of recognize saying basically nothing. The only appealing thing in KOTM's trailer is the monsters, and most people won't shell out $15 to see a CGI boxing match.

What I'm saying is that Kong is a better movie, even though it's the most marvel-tier of the series so far.

Sometimes the better movies just don't do well in theaters. They get buried under the garbage of that year, but they end up being remembered and appreciated by future generations while the garbage is forgotten.

I went to see it with my dad and grandad. Grandad saw was a showa fan back in the day, and dad was Heisei fan. And those two were really hyped during the movie. When the original Mothra theme started up, they were very moved, and when the Godzilla theme came up, they got teary eyed (as did I).

Clearly it won't win any awards but:
-Story was at least interesting.
-Idris carried it.
-Riley and Mako was super anime, but for some reason it works.

I think they need to find release dates that allow for a decent window of hype. Both Godzilla movies released in very crowded summers and barely got just 1 week to themselves, and the 2014 movie just plummeted because of mixed audience reaction. They were each surrounded by comic book movies, comedies, and other various action movies.

Kong released in March having to worry about Logan and Beauty and the Beast, but the demographic for those was pretty different, so Kong legged out at a decent rate. Beauty and the Beast was for kids, teen to adult girls, and moms. Logan was for people who waned the big Wolverine drama that is also rated R. Kong knew it was the big PG-13 action movie of that month, and it did alright because of that. So they could stick to big March releases since those work out sometimes,

Maybe since the Avengers absorbing all of the hype from the general audience is done for now and that they secured a relatively safe date for it, Godzilla vs. Kong could stand a chance at a solid profit next year. At least that's what I hope.

I've never given a damn about Godzilla movies in the past but I saw this due to its trailers having the same vibe to the dumb but fun Pacific Rim.
I've seen a few Godzilla movies ('54, Biollante,'98 and '14) but the serviceable human plot along with monster fight scenes brought me back to the old Harryhausen movies that started my interest in films.
KOTM might have been more action-y but fuck me if it didn't give me the same childish wonderment as Talos awakening in Jason and the Argonaughts.

Not great. The whole "Godzilla is a force of nature" is kind of neat, and eldritch monstrosity Ghidorah was ok
But the characters were, for the most part, the weakest bit of the movies. Haruo is nothing but a hotheaded retard hell bent on revenge, Yuko's only personality trait was "muh Haruo". Although Metphies was not bad

I love this movie. I've seen it five time. But unfortunately while scenes like this are awesome. on my many repeat viewing i noticed each fight had weird cuts throughout them. like when this webm happens one second godzilla is leaning over Ghidora forcing him down then ghidora bites the power station and one second later hes doing his cool pose attack with Godzilla slightly away from him no longer holding him down

also when Godzilla breaks through the arctic ice then it cuts to the humans reaction then 2 seconds later back to godzilla already completely standing on the ice.
I dont know if they deleted some footage of the fights throughout the movie or were just hoping the audience wouldn't notice the small inconsistency during the cuts. personally im hoping for the former that might make it into an extended edition

I got some interesting Ghidorah trivia for you guys. Basically, russia has an old legend about a three headed dragon called 'Zmey Gorynych'. That dragon has also made a couple of appearances on the big screen. most famously in the 1956 Soviet film 'Ilya Muromets'. The movie was distributed by New Toho in Japan. Japan renamed Zmey Gorynych into King Dragon. Also, since he is a multi-headed dragon and those are called Hydra's, it is possible that King Ghidorah''s name comes from russian pronunciation of Hydra. In russian, H changes into G, so Hydra in russian is Gidrah. So it leads me to believe that the same way that Gojira is a Gorilla-whale and Mothra is Moth, King Ghidorah's name is basically King Hydra and he was most definitely inspired by Zemy Gorynych.

Also, another amusing fact is that in a popular russian cartoon of that legend, Zmey Gorynych has a different personality for each of his three heads. I don't think the people who made KOTM know that fact, but the three different personalities in both versions are really similar.

What I don't understand about the human drama complainers is that none of the characters made decisions that messed with my suspension of disbelief. Like explain to me how an idealistic environmentalist like Vera's character wouldn't be all for genocide until the genocide starts and suddenly she loses her stomach for it in the face of reality. And explain how a daughter character on an idealized environmentalist mission "adventure!" with her mom wouldn't be just as short-sighted and fickle-minded in her purpose as her mom. I think it goes beyond that and people simply have no basic character analysis skills or short term memory. The movie begins with a traumatic event and right after you get pointers that the mother isn't stable. Both her and the dad reacted extremely poorly to the events of the start and went in completely opposite directions. The difference is that while he gets to interact with people and see events that change his perspective, she goes all in and spirals down.

On top of that, while she is shown deeply regretting what she has done, Jonah shrugs it off and goes on with the plan, enforcing the idea that she was the one who didn't really believe in what they were doing.
The witch hunt for plot holes and bad writing makes people think that every character must be 100% rational and true to their word all the time.

If Destroyah shows up in a Legendary film, I really hope they take some liberties with the design. While I certainly love the look itself, I would want them to redesign him to be a bit more agile, since as is he seems like he can barely waddle.
