The ending should have at least been that daughter agrees with mother's plans and helps her raise humanity.

First of all, she was already considering her current progress as a success based on the fact that she started growing corn.
Second of all if she does it for 10,000 years, she causes 10,000 years of suffering for the human girls she produces.
Third of all, who shot the first daughter and why are the exterior drones hostile in the first place if it is all part of a plan and why would the first daughter seek solace in the very place she originally escaped from?

Woman was an orphan who got found by local humans (maybe Mother both (a) wanted Woman to test Daughter years later AND (b) wanted Woman to unknowingly help Mother track down remaining human groups?); Woman is the exact same age as the length of the experiment (i.e., the last time we saw the first baby); and Woman remembers old television shows--she listened to the old TV shows as a baby before being cast out.

This movie is weird. On one hand it's not very deep. But on the other hand, there are elements of the movie that are much smarter than first impressions suggest.
