It was always a PR stunt, it didn't change the course of the war, just slightly sped it up.
What's even funnier is that the Germans thought so little of US troops they basically ignored the American sector and based most of their armoured and SS panzer divisions to fight the British and Canadians, and even facing the worst troops in Normandy with more men and equipment than the British had burgers still struggled to make inroads into France.
It's a good thing the Jews are really good at exploiting the American workforce to make money because Americans lack anything else.

There are a few reasons why it's so dramatized -
1. It's an amphibian assault. That's great to film, lends itself to great action and drama.
2. Casualties were fairly low, so it's not a hideous bloodbath that might put people off seeing it in an heroic light
3. It was actually very simple operation - land on beach, push against enemy that's array in a defensive position, small geographical area, very few actual front line combatants
4. It was an international operation pitting a "good" cause (the "Free World", of liberty, individualism etc) against a monolithic enemy representing a "bad" cause (simplistic, but again lends itself well to drama where retarded cinema goers need a very clear protagonist and antagonist).
In comparison, you can't film something like Kursk, which is the battle that determined the war. Kursk was a mess that spanned a huge geographical area involving hundreds of thousands of frontline combatants with two armies that were representing ideologies that were basically indistinguishable aside from a focus on ethnicity. Casualties were horrendous for both sides, easily one of the bloodiest battles in human history, and took place on a very boring landscape.
