tell us about urself, who are u?

I tend to go through directors chronologically and get into interviews and side projects they do along the way. I'm currently studying engineering and am in the middle of a research internship in japan right now. I also make stupid little anime music videos which you can find under the channel Prostrate Constantly on Youtube. You?

bump

>look at my taste, look at how patrician I am
And it's all for show because you posturing faggots never make any film threads on here with substance.

I guess you can call me a normie expert

Attached: topsters2 (1).png (2089x2191, 3.24M)

dayum. top 40 will take any user atleast half an hour to do. what were you thinking OP?

like a good portion of your list is bad but easy rider and brown bunny are really good films so good job

>signs
very based.

but the rest is too many old movies. seems like too snobby and patrician for the sake of being patrician

I used to lurk around here a lot and would make Greenaway and Hooper threads but they'd always die with only a couple replies. These threads usually get a lot more conversation and went further.

Hardly an "expert" but it looks like you're just on the cusp of discovering the flaws of the established film canon. A big step forward for you I think would be checking out some Tobe Hooper (start with Texas Chain Saw and Eggshells and go chronologically from there, in my opinion), Orson Welles (I mean Citizen Kane obviously if you haven't seen it, then Ambersons and It's All True, which really deserves more recognition), and Hideaki Anno's live action works (Love & Pop and Ritual are mindblowing man). Also it's cool that you've checked out some Griffith, have you seen his early shorts? I've been going through them recently and I'm surprised at how tight they are. Particularly A Corner in Wheat, The Massacre, and The Country Doctor. They're really short and definitely rewarding.

I mean you can change the collage size on the site if you want to make a smaller grid, I was just using mine as an example.

Brown Bunny I'm certain is one of the great films but I'm not sure about Easy Rider. I have a feeling it's not going to be the best of Hopper's filmography but I've only seen Easy Rider and The Last Movie. A lot of my grid were just films that were instrumental in me developing my current principles and not really the fullest expression of them. Baby steps though. If you like The Brown Bunny I'd be interested in seeing your list.

Seen Texas Chainsaw, Citizen Kane, and Love & Pop. All were pretty good, just not my top 100. Most of the films up there are ones that've stuck with me for a long time. Gonna go on a noir binge soon

Although I did make an attempt to focus on films that get less focus in the established group of "good films" that is perpetrated around here, none of my choices were surface level and I do feel a strong affinity to all the films included. As I'm sure you do with your grid, which unfortunately has the opposite problem of feeling excessively safe. A recommendation to vary your taste a bit would be to pick a director you particularly enjoy, such as George Miller or Peter Jackson in your case, and really try to pin down on the purpose behind their films and what makes them unique. This can be done through just going through their filmography or watching interviews with them. This can help you explore their movies more meaningfully and maybe even find some more unique film principles that would inform your future viewing.

Good shit man. Your taste might be less scattered though if you were to place more of a focus on directors. To me, going through films based on genre or the established film canon is like being a tourist, you miss a lot of the context necessary to have a deeper engagement with the art form.

I swear this same guy has been making the film threads for past week and there has always been that one guy saying he has only watched 1 minute of Angelo films.

I feel like I'm Groundhog Bogged.

>Your taste might be less scattered though if you were to place more of a focus on directors
There's just too much kino to go around

Attached: thumb_apu-apustaja--3-9312696.png (200x162, 11K)

>pin down the purpose behind their films
i'm sorry dude. i gotta work 7 to 5 every day

only films directed by hopper i've seen are easy rider and the last movie as well. i fucking love the both of them to death. the last movie is severely underrated imo, the non chronological cutting gets to me and there's some really underrated scenes.
if you dig that whole era of filmmaking as much as i do you should check out five easy pieces if you haven't. nicholson's best role, it really showcases what the "american new wave" really brought to the table and it's fucking retarded that it died so quick.
>If you like The Brown Bunny I'd be interested in seeing your list.
man i've tried to make lists so many times it just gives me a headache since i'm probably autistic and can't make decisions. i'm really picky.
if you're into polarizing modern american cinema you should check out the comedy, probably in my top 3 favorite films and has been for years. even though tim's lost it, this film was his peak imo. this film has so much packed into it,. i absolutely love it. if only more american "indie" films followed in it's footsteps

Attached: comedy-span-jumbo-v2.jpg (1024x536, 99K)

I know that feel man! That was what drove me to explore directors in the first place, its much easier to have a linear, chronological track through specific filmographies than try and tackle everything at the same time. At that point to me it's almost like a TV show, instead of having to browse a watchlist of over a hundred or so movies I just think "well tonight am I gonna watch the next Welles, Coppola, or Hooper?".

Same here man, and when I'm not working I got studying to do as well. Doesn't mean I can't spend my free time consciously looking at the media I engage with.

Yeah The Last Movie's insane. I gotta check it out again, it was an exhausting first watch in a really positive way. I love that era of film too, Two-Lane Blacktop would definitely have a spot on my list if I'd seen a little more Hellman. I've seen Five Easy Pieces and yessss it's absolutely fantastic. A counter recc in regards to that is Head, which is a completely bonkers film which was one of the first things Nicholson worked on.
Wow you perfectly articulated how I feel about The Comedy. While not in my top 3 it's definitely one of the best films of the last decade. Did you catch Alverson's next film Entertainment? That was fascinating, though definitely not as good as The Comedy.

i am also more of a feelz guy. i don't rate movies highly because of their technical or philosophical aspect. i just "like" movies that entertain me in the moment or give me other certain feelz.

btw. this would have been a great thread on the old imdb forums. but those Nagas had to shut down

Yea Forums is more accustomed to chart threads and everyone there basically already has one. Yea Forums just needs time to catch up. Would also be nice for people here to share taste other than letting capeshit and current event threads spam the board

>Two-Lane Blacktop would definitely have a spot on my list if I'd seen a little more Hellman
i like two lane blacktop too
i'm a beach boys fan so it was a must watch for me cause dennis wilson, my only problem is warren oates character, he ruins a lot of it imo. i just feel as if two lane blacktop should've been a quiet road film (sort of like the brown bunny lol) but instead warren oates adds in these shitty comedic dialogue scenes that make the film feel like a comedy. should've been more aimless.
>A counter recc in regards to that is Head, which is a completely bonkers film which was one of the first things Nicholson worked on.
yeah, i heard both good and bad things about it. will check it out when i can, sounds interesting.
also from the same studio came king of marvin gardens, ever watch it? directed by the guy who directed five easy pieces just like a year after, stars nicholson and bruce dern. it's almost a deconstruction of nichoslon films, he's not cocky or a rebel, he plays a quiet role. the film's really underrated and almost completely forgotten
>Did you catch Alverson's next film Entertainment? That was fascinating, though definitely not as good as The Comedy.
yeah. my problem is that alverson strayed away from what made the comedy so good.
i'm not saying he should keep making the comedy over and over again, it's just that i don't really dig his new style. it feels like a hipster attempting lynch. surrealist for no reason other than shock for the most part. i love turkington in the role though, and i liked the ending and just how much unresolved plotlines alverson will write in and how unforgiven he is to hamburger's character.

Attached: 3239.jpg (1001x552, 248K)

also i'm excited for alverson's new film, the mountain. even though he's still continuing in the direction of entertainment, i'm interested in what he has to make still

I swear man I'm totally that guy as well. None of my favorite films I watch and scratch my neck and go "hmmmm yess that is a very innovative camera technique and I really see where the director is getting at here". I'm mostly saying that when delve into a director you almost start to know them. You start to see how their films fit together, and when you watch a major work, you get these moments of revelation where everything comes together. It's so rewarding, it's almost like the emotional investment of TV but you learn a lot more along the way.

Dude Beach Boys are legend. Love You and SMiLE are real singular works, I have all their 60s and 70s works on vinyl and man I revisit them like no other artist.
That's quite the different Two-Lane Blacktop take, that it's not aimless enough! The Shooting definitely has a more aimless feel to it, so there's another recc!
Apparently I already have King of Marvin Gardens in my watchlist despite having no memory of putting it there. I will definitely check it out, seems like something I'd enjoy.
In regards to Entertainment I definitely get that feel to it. Although maybe more 3 Women/Van Sant than Lynch, but yea I don't feel like that was a healthy direction for him based on the strengths of The Comedy. Yea I'll definitely check out The Mountain as well on account of him being one of the few interesting working auteurs.
Oh man and how could I forget about The Rain People! It's Coppola's breakthrough film and it might be my favorite film of that early New Hollywood phase. It definitely would have a high placement on my chart if I hadn't already had a bunch of Coppola already. It has that indie late 60's feel, but has this really beautiful melancholy mixed in to it. It's insane that this film goes so unmentioned despite it being really goddamn major. Vincent Gallo said it's the one movie he thinks about when making a film in regards to capturing that special feel.

Attached: Rain People.jpg (580x881, 96K)

you can't win against all the spammers and generals. only bumps and the frontpage on the catalog matter

The bottom rows shouldn't be so small. Would be better if they all had the same size.

>influental in the way a movie is/will be made
You need to check out David Lean user

Attached: davidlean.png (728x868, 1.1M)

Isn't influential a dumb way to praise a film? Is influenced measured in how it's made corporations easier to churn out films that our publicly accepted as passible? The best works of art always come from a creator's unique perspective and vision being brought to a work while not needing to rely on outside influence.

Honestly favorites are Big Gay.

Attached: kino.jpg (2185x1400, 364K)

Is Memoirs of a Geisha that good? I've never seen a western-made Asian film that I liked

On that topic i really enjoyed the last emperor

Here are some movies I like

wtf it got rid of my image

Yo check out Eaten Alive if you like Texas Chain Saw. It's a little different in atmosphere but it's just as relentless.

I could see you really digging Rumble Fish man, check it out if you haven't.

Have you ever checked out the films Jerry Lewis directed? They're really crazy man, they're borderline experimental and really introspective sometimes. Start with The Bellboy if they seem interesting to you.

Yo dude you ever see Spontaneous Combustion? Crazy film man.

>le edgy Yea Forums teenager list

Hey don't be like that. A lot of those films are really good, and to have the balls to throw in a Soderbergh is hella admirable.

Did you see Van Sant's newest, Don't Worry He Won't Get Far on Foot? It fits into that whole warm empathy trip thing he started with Good Will Hunting and it's definitely my favorite in that regard. It bummed me out it got like no recognition on release, I think it's the best film of last year.

Nah never seen it, I need to check out more of Tobe Hooper's stuff desu

>A lot of those films are really good
Thanks!
>to have the balls to throw in a Soderbergh is hella admirable
Why?

Attached: BelleDeJour.png (1280x720, 1.04M)

Oh definitely man, his films are one of a kind. His first film, Eggshells, is available on Youtube in great quality and it's such a masterpiece.

It's just that with the sort of counterculture canon a lot of your favorites fit into it feels like there's very little Soderbergh love. It's a shame because I think he's great. By the way in terms of recc's for you I'd highly recommend you check out some of Greenaway's work, particularly The Draughtsman's Contract and A Zed & Two Noughts to start with. I think you could find a lot to love there.

Bro if you ain't seen Buffalo 66 get on that shit for real.

Finally got it working.

Way of the Gun is great gun kino. McQ is a fucking talented director when it comes to both action (WOTG) and spectacle (Fallout).

I have to credit M:I Fallout as the single greatest spectacle in cinema I've seen; but I wish he went back to films like Way of the Gun, at least every now and then.

noroi is a piece of shit. just people talking about things not shown and some freeze frame spooky vhs footage.

I think Way of the Gun was a big (commercial) flop and he has never done something that he conceived from the ground up again, he does a lit of script doctor work though. The first Jack Reacher is my (distant) 2nd favourite of his films.

Well it is strange that such a incredibly obscure horror film has grown such committed fan base purely by word of mouth, if it has no objective merits.

Maybe you could recommend some of your favourite horror films?

Attached: 3x3 horror.jpg (920x920, 220K)

Hardly no reason for Way of the Gun to be a flop, I consider his Reacher inferior to it.

But Fallout was really something else. On its own class when it comes to such films.

Attached: topsters2.jpg (1487x1400, 234K)

its hipsters being hipsters. lake mungo is the same thing. awful. and no im not going to recommend films.

Pretty good except for your more left-field choices (Exorcist III, Revenge of the Sith) but we've all got them. 7/10

Nice variety, but some very questionable selections (Frozen, Punch Drunk Love). 3,000 films is clearly not enough. Watch more. 5/10

Not bad – once you get past the first line. 6/10

But there are so many found footage fims why Noroi and not Grave Encounters 2 or Atrocious, to give two examples.
