Smithereens had godawful writing but fucking amazing performances. Like, damn. Still think it edged out Striking Vipers simply because the premise of 1 required a lot of things to come together perfectly. Two pairs of actors carrying the characterization and tone of one through multiple time periods... its a super ambitious script. Gayniggers did well.

That was the most "typical" Black Mirror episode to me.
Even if nothing from this season or Bandersnatch ranks in my favorites at least I could tell they're doing something different. More fun, less edge. Which is fine for now. This is how I expected the actual "americanized" S3 to be: Same 3 ep format but remove all the "dark" stuff and put some celebrities on it.
-E1 was alright but replace VR with sexting and you got some 00s nostalgia.
-E2 had potential but just went nowhere and proof they prefer no ending like a grim one

It was more about how these social media conglomerates have so much access and reach into the lives of everyone on the planet that they have become nigh omnipotent. Billy Bauer is portrayed as Christ-like and his company is global spanning and can easily pull up any information they want about anyone in an instant or listen in, becoming far more efficient detectives than the police and FBI. The way the entire episode builds up to how badly the main character just wants to talk to Billy Bauer and have his voice be heard by him is very much like what it would be like if Jesus came back. Every single person who believed in him would be desperate to get a moment of his time and talk to him, so much so that situations like this would be happening daily just to force his attention. But in the end, he's just a guy who owns a tech company. It was pretty on the nose about how celebrity personalities/technology/social media have become our new gods in both the way people view them and the reach they have, and the Miley Cyrus episode kind of echoed this sentiment in the ideas of making a famous singer "immortal" through holographic performances and AI toy robots so that every fan can have their own piece of her to cherish and revere.

Best episode of S5, but still weak overall. Fell apart in the final third and there was LITERALLY no reason for the mouse subplot other to provide a) a brain-scanning thingumadoodad b) an electro-paralysing grenade.

Miley was great though.
