I haven't watched it in about ten years, but I just remember feeling like it had completely jumped the shark by the last 10 to 20 episodes. I felt the exact same way watching the past 3 seasons of GoT as I did watching the episodes of FMA after they surpassed the manga. You could just tell the writing took a nosedive in quality and went in a completely different direction than it had been going up to that point.

The manga becomes worse after the parts 2003 covers. It never really jumps the shark at all, there are some obvious holes in the world building but it's doesn't go full generic shonen retard like late manga FMA.

It doesn't need to be contrived just because characters got happy endings. Their character arcs felt completed and didn't feel forced to me. Ed gave up his alchemy because he realized that power meant nothing if he didn't have the people he loved in his life, that was more important - surrounding yourself with people who care about you.
