John Millius Conan the Barbarian

Baby Driver?

Falling Down

Putting a bunch of pop songs into a movie counts the same as making an actual soundtrack that conveys emotion and mood.

Upstream Color

thief

negers don't live in trees

What a disgrace his lost. Fucking Villeneuve.

Not anymore.

Arrival was a bad movie. Its soundtrack had no gravitas because you didn't care about any of the characters or anything in the fucking movie.

Annihilation was pretty good.

Annilhilation should not be next to those good movies

this of course. Arrival is garbage in comparison to Upstream Color

Is that how they make potato chips?

Prometheus was better than Annilhilation

what is the scientific reason for that shape of the ship?

There are a lot of politics that go into the decision. Warner probably wanted Hans Zimmer from the start (if you can afford the best, you hire the best), but he was tied up on tour and Villeneuve was really gunning for his friend Johannsson. But if Johannsson was missing his deadlines or delivering material that the suits really weren't happy with, at that point it's out of the director's hands.

Is this good alien kino?
Do you see the aliens?

This is probably the best extraterrestial movie there has ever been.

You partially see them, so you get a basic idea of their shape.
It is a pretty calming film, with nice visuals.
Slow paced but if you like the "clean" futuristic look you might like it.
I know i did enjoy the screening that was outside years ago.

Interstellar.

Dunkirk

it's a great alien kino

Depth isn't required if the movie is good

Shutter island
Anime

The Fly

whoah hold on there buddy

are you some kind of pleb?

Inception

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Pleb filtered by a mainstream Hollywood release, yikes.

Spirited Away
Perks of being a wallflower. Maybe because I just saw those movies

both were good I liked Arrival more though as a whole

This will never not irk me
While Zimmer is by no means a bad composer, and his score was quite good, Johansson would’ve undoubtedly made a far more atmospheric and distinctive soundtrack

this is like glorified schizophrenia, right next to religious autists

Reminder that he got replaced because Johannsson literally went full on doomer mode unable to work on anything

Then he overdosed and died
RIP Johann

Did you watch the movie?

Does anyone remember the battle Los Angeles ads?

Source for this? The press statements were very flowery and didn't mention any difficulties.

How could they translate the alien language with 0 common ground with any human language when it took the rosetta stone to decipher hieroglyphs?

It fucking sucks but Zimmer's soundtrack was kino anyway so i don't care.

They had physical contact to play charades and board games vs not having anyone to talk to and needing a key to decipher.

That's basically what reddit considers the real reason to be

>you can't enjoy something because i don't think it has enough meaning
whew lad.

That is a shit counterpoint.

I don't even remember it. Modern movie soundtracks suck.

Arrival isn’t supposed to be deep. It also has probably the best low key twist in any movie I’ve ever seen

Blade Runner. The Ridley Scott one.

I didn't like Arrival and I liked Annihilation

what do you mean by low key

Literally any other movie
OP you are a flaming fucking baby who has barely watched any movies if you think Arrival is impressive in any way shape or form

Yea Arrival is basically an updated version of this

I was just stating something, not trying to make a point, although I can see why you'd think that considering what reddit means around here

Contact was much better, literally an example of the Soul vs Soulless meme

I remember Oldboy being the best for me. Denis is great though.

As a guy who mostly works as a foley/sound design guy this is not uncommon at all. Many movie soundtracks wind up having multiple composers that get replaced as the movie gets closer and closer to release. The original composers get paid but due to studio meddling/directorial disagreements/etc. many soundtracks don't see the light of day, so I dont feel rhis kind of stuff is ever something to mourn about, it's probably happened much more often than you realized.

In spite of enjoying it very much I still find an important flaw in it
>build a machine as expensive as the USA total GDP if I remember right it was like half a trillion or more
>only for the thing to be a 1 time use that leaves no proof at all and only basically tells 1 person "hi, we exist this is a first step, time to get the fuck out with no proofs, bye".
Might as well have used those money to fund NASA.

neon demon

Blade Runner 2049
Man of Steel
Interstellar
Inception
Annihilation

At least near the end Angela Basset kind of owned James Woods with the recording.

Rocketman.

I really liked the soundtrack in It Follows, worked really well throughout the film.

I rewatched this after Arrival came out because I was reminded of it, not having seen it since I was a kid. I'd completely forgotten about the dead dad story, and my dad died when I was her age so that scene of her trying to use the radio to contact him fucking broke me. Now I can't tell whether it's that personal angle that makes it so much more impactful, or whether the search for contact story is just more impactful than Arrival's time vision family story.

I liked the movie but had no clue in the end, what happened?

Tarzan

Wouldn't wikipedia have a summary of the movie? Try reading that.
As I understood it what happened was:
1) Learning that language allows you to see and live the future at once
2) Which allows her to speak to the japanese or was it chinese? Guy
3) And then she knows her daughter will die but stil chooses to have the baby only to see her die (again from a certain point of view) and remain without an husband too because holy shit son, you knew and still let it happen.

Interstellar aka where he got the idea from.

fpbp

man foley sounds fun as fuck, can you write about it a little?

For anyone who wants to know more about this, there's an excellent book called Torn Music that documents every case of a rejected/replaced score that the author could find.
Starting somewhere in the late '80s or '90s the pace film composers were expected to work at was so fast that if movies were sucking at test screenings, they could throw out the score and have a new one in less than a month. It's a last-minute gamble that they hope will "fix" the movie and it doesn't work. It's a little fascinating how petty and nonsensical some of the reasons are for months and tens of thousands of dollars of work to be thrown out for an 11th-hour rush job.

This movie was so overrated, holy shit.

If you didn't see the "twist" coming by halfway through the movie, at the latest, then you're a literal retard.

What 2) point has to do with anything? Also where is the aliens? In the end it seems they are just some kind of metaphor... That's all right, but whole beggining is so epic and quite realistic, that such twist kinda made all so meaningless, dunno..

BR2049

Wow dude, you're like completely fucking retarded eh?

>watching this movie
>mother is in the garden while the child is playing with dolls
>tom cruise does some narration, says something about seeing him whenever she looks at the daugther
>cuts to the daughter looking at the monkey doll, but the monkey doll is right in frame
>'so does the monkey remind her of morgan freeman?'

You should totally record yourself watching movies and share your funny comments on youtube.

forgot to mention it was with father. he first said aloud the daughter must be tom cruise, so I replied the monkey doll must be morgan freeman

I meant the plot didn't revolve around it and it was just one of those "Hey, remember that thing that you thought in the beginning? Well I tricked ya ha!"

When you think of big movie twists, you think of the Sixth Sense, Fight Club, etc. Movies where it's pretty clear everything was written around this big reveal. Not this movie, the movie stands on its own without the twist, but the twist itself is great and really only serves to add to the movie.

Arrival is part of a recent series of movies I'd describe as Dunning-Kruger Sci-Fi. Along with Interstellar and to a somewhat lesser extent The Martian, they perfectly play to the crowd that fancies themselves as (and, to be fair, may truly be) smarter than average audiences but are not as smart as genuinely "smart people." They are movies designed to make the audience feel smart by introducing complicated and heady concepts, and then holding the viewer's hand the entire way through until there is next to nothing to be left up to interpretation.

If you didn't already know the twist in Arrival by the time she was in the milky section of the ship with the aliens AT LEAST, you perfectly fit the audience I am talking about.

There is no reward for being smart while viewing these movies because everything is eventually spelled out in big fridge magnet letters. Any clever idea is made so transparent that even the most simple in the audience will get it. It also removes any reward for rewatching or trying to figure out what you just saw.

Granted, there is a difference between Arrival and Interstellar. I think where Interstellar was pretending to have a brain it actually didn't have, Arrival has a brain that it is refusing to let the audience use.

Completely disappointing movie.

Also
>so that just happened

>I watch movies so I can feel smart
>So other people do the same thing

Arrival is a good movie. Not because it makes me feel smart, but because it has an interesting plot and great atmosphere. Just because you're a pseud who needs to feel better by having a "Smarter" movie choice doesn't mean everyone else who watches movies is a pseud.

Interstellar is a good movie too. Fun plot, great atmosphere. I haven't seen the Martian, but I read the book and thought it was reddit trash.
