There's some YAAS QWEEEN, but it's not really that jarring.
Basically, there was a huge group of scientists working with the main character, HOUSE style. In interest of character writing, they condensed this team into a single female charatcer.
Now unlike a lot of YAAS QWEEN characters, she actually has a reason to be smart; She's a hard-working nuclear physisicist, and she's essentially represented as a fresh pair of eyes to help Legasov with a second perspective when he works himself into a rut. She also works as a more brave and righteous character than him, but it is said that the original scientist team did that too, so that's just her reflecting their values.

She's not perfect, and she makes mistakes throughout the show. She's not a Mary Sue, and the creators are forward about the fact that she's made up.

Yeah I would say the most jarring thing wasn’t that she was female but just the way the character was written. Whenever she shows up the plot moves along very quickly. I think her dialogue violates “show don’t tell” a little too often. Even if I didn’t know, at no point would I have been convinced that person really existed or was anything like that. Nothing else was “made up” exactly but the way ppl in the show approach the power dynamics is very poorly done and guileless. At many points these scientists act naive about how the party works and/or express unconcealed hostility towards the party, which would have never happened. There’s a serious lack of subtlety. A large audience requires it unfortunately.
