I remember a case here in Germany. The guy was a school teacher, the woman was aswell. Out of the blue she accused him of raping her in an empty class room.
There was literally zero evidence. None, nothing. It even came out during the trial that she hadn't even been at school at the supposed day. She just claimed she must have misremembered the date due to trauma. It also came out during the trial that the woman had already made up a rape accusation against a colleague at her former school before.

Even the fucking state attorney pleaded not guilty. Still, the guy was convicted and spent 4 years or something before his new lawyer got the case reopened. He didn't have the slightest idea why she did it and why she picked him since they barely ever talked to each other.

Prosecution wins something like 96% of the time. Unless you have a lawyer of the absolute maximum power level, if the cops hone in on you you're fucked whether you're guilty or innocent.

Most people aren't aware of this because the cops tend to go after people with a string of previous criminal convictions when they need to pin something on someone, but yeah, if you're unlucky enough to cross their path this whole idea that if you're innocent you'll get your day in court, be able to present evidence in your favour, and have a jury of your peers find you not-guilty is basically fantasy.

The vast majority of defendants make a deal with the prosecution without a trial, partly because sentencing laws are so harsh they simply can't risk being found guilty not matter how much evidence they have on their side, partly because most people get cheap public defenders who're all about volume and will happily throw their client under a bus to speed the process up. For those that go to court - juries are usually idiots who can't understand technical evidence and will just follow what the prosecutor tells them, unless the defendant is someone particularly sympathetic like a white woman with kids.

People talk about how much race effects conviction and sentencing for the same crime in the same circumstances, but the gender gap is something four or five times bigger. Which tells you a lot about race and gender in America, yes, but that's not what you should be paying attention to - your takeaway from that should be just how much discretion juries and judges have, and just how much that discretion depends on the personal characteristics of the defendant rather than the evidence.

tl;dr the justice system your see on shows like Law & Order and CSI is largely a myth. Evidence doesn't count for shit, it's all about who you are and how much money you have.

In Finland you can violently rape someone and may not even get a prison sentence. You can also just attack someone for no reason, beat them badly enough to give them permanent disability, and you won't go to prison.
