There were supposed to be tanks leading the assault on the beach and protecting the infantry from machine gun fire. But the stupid Americans didn't make sure that the landing craft can actually support a tank so they sank. They were also afraid of shelling the beach too much because then it would be impossible to climb over the cliff, so the defenses and machine gub nests were intact.

Despite all this, the soldiers were given the order to storm the beach. It was literally a zerg rush. The Americans were able to send more soldiers than the Germans were able to kill and thus they took Omaha Beach.
