Unironically I think it's one of the best written fiction series out there especially after the time skip. It's the trends that persist in anime that's the issue. I think very VERY rarely you'll have an anime that can connect with people on a human level and actual be somewhat thought provoking but on the whole it's capeshit tier action and a focus on aesthetics meant to appeal to the most ADD ridden zoomers. Look at the examples posted in this thread mostly capeshit tier fight scenes. Quality of storytelling, acting, themes, and dialogue are much MUCH lower across the board on average when compared to films. They also tend to lack any subtly whatsoever on the whole. The main character has lost his powers, thousands are dead, and the world just...moves on. Imagine a shonen arc from the perspective of someone living in the destablized Middle East, and then at the "end" we are dragged back to the truth that to the average person, all of this pain means fucking nothing, despite the fact that our countries are directly involved in them. The Chimera Ant arc isnt an epic war deciding the fate of the world. Its a contained skirmish that gets out of hand due to shortsightedness and circumstance.

I don't get why people like AoT so much. The character building is pretty lacklustre and takes up a big part of the show and them trying to humanise the Titans after making them do horrible stuff just does not work all that well since we don't know what their reasons are for doing these things. I'm expecting them to have a somewhat good reason so the fights against them don't make me feel anything because as far as I know their motivations are better than those of the main protagonists.

The point of this was that it was SUPPOSED to look like Erwin had gone insane and forced them into a kamikaze charge because of his own arrogance and pride

Then the reveal that the smoke signals and screams were cover for Levi to take out the titans and sneak up on the Beast Titan, that Erwin and the Scouts were sacrificing themselves so that Levi could reach the Beast to kill him, was dramatic and a completely changes the scene.

But the anime is for braindead retards who couldn't understand this. So they straight up tell us the plan and then it kills all of the tension.
