Most of the show doesn't live up to its opening.

Watched both seasons last month. If I wasn't a student of classical history, I wouldn't have watched it. It's treatment of the Roman military, society, and politics is really well informed particularly in constructing the Roman 'mindset' or 'worldview', that is pretty hard to nail down; the characters are patriotic, yet self centered, cosmopolitan, yet xenophobic, duplicitous, yet forthright.

But the writing is on the whole bad and very repetitive and some of the acting is downright horrible. My biggest complaint would be the absence of any real action scenes. The fighting in the first minute of episode one is literally as action packed battle you're going to get. What it lacks in action, it makes up for in decadence in set design and coordinating legions of colorful background characters.

The three best parts of the show for me were the news announcer you makes an appearance about every episode, the excellent portrayal of Antony and Cleopatra in the last two episodes of the show, and the epic bromance between Pullo and Vorenus who had some pretty good moments.
