They randomly have to ditch him during days of future past, or else the movie wouldve been done with no conflict, and their reason is so badly made up. Comic book movies have gone through 3 major shits over the past 20 years.

There was the "Phantom Menace" era where you had comic book movies as big dumb standalone blockbusters like Spiderman, Daredevil and Blade. This really is just a repeat of comic books being the summer movie trend like they were after Batman in '89 and Superman in '78.

In 2005, you had the Nolan era where comic book movies finally proved the genre had some artistic legitimacy outside of trying to make money.

At the same time you have the Marvel era of a cinematic universe.

Here's Xmen's problem... it is stuck in the Phantom Menace era that we've moved past more than a decade ago. Big dumb blockbusters with big dumb sequels. The people making these films do not understand the conceit of a "cinematic" universe and they certainly don't have artistic legitimacy outside of making a quick buck. If Xmen really embraced the modern era, it would have set up the Pheonix saga properly - this is a story arc that should take place over multiple movies. It's not a standalone story. FOX should have cut the cord and rebooted years ago. This is also why NO ONE is talking about Deadpool today - it's still stuck in the Phantom Menace era.
